Americas - Central America

I would like to head to Panama on the third week of March and can't find anything from New York to Panama City for less than $560 round-trip with Copa, or $518 with 1 stop.
I also have the week before Easter available, but flights are obviously more expensive: about $65-$80 more.
Is this price reasonable, or should I wait? I haven't been to central America in a while, and have no idea whether or not this price is legit.
Thank you so much for your a dive. I really appreciate it.
So... just today, I got to thinking about traveling to Central America next year -- maybe in mid-Jan. This gives me about two months to llearn Spanish (I studied it in high school but that was a long time ago). Can someone recommend a free app or website that teaches simple, conversational Spanish? Muchas gracias!
Is there any advantage to be in a private shuttle vs. a bus at border crossings? Going from Antigua to Copan Ruinas, Honduras.
Wondering if the lines are longer if you have to wait for all the people on your bus to get through?
Does the private shuttle driver go across the border with us to get us to Copan Ruinas hotel... or likely we just catch whatever transport available for the short distance to Copan Ruinas.
Many folks remark how uncomfortable the shuttles are... is this mostly that shared shuttles can be crowded.. or is it that even in uncrowded situations the seats are uncomfortable?
Being able to open windows, more easily adjust air conditioning, request stops when I want
within reason/fairness, and not having a movie playing... if these are plusses in my book.. are they what i might reasonably expect when hiring a private shuttle?
Thanks. more »
My family and I (children 14 and 12) are planning a trip to Honduras in June. We fly into San Pedro Sula and go directly to La Ceiba We will probably use a private van, good contacts from another post.
We plan to attend a language school in La Ceiba for two weeks and do some snorkeling somewhere. We would appreciate any recommendations about language schools, snorkeling Utila or Roatan (we like to snorkel directly off the beach) and kayaking. We have done some research and like the following places, if anyone has suggestions, recommendations or warnings please share.
La Ceiba - Omega Jungle Lodge
Need a recommendation for a small cheap hotel on the beach in La Ceiba.
Central American Spanish School (We will stay w/a family)
Tujillo - Tranquility Bay
Utila - Sunni's Cove
Kayaking - Kayak Utila
Additional questions: about how much does it cost to travel between SPS ... more »
We are in La Ceiba right now and the Lonely Planet book is a bit off. Moskitia Hostel is closed and Banana Repulic is in a new area by the mall. Also, it is very nice and they have only been there for one month. Dorms $12 and private room for $24. Hope this helps.
My hubby and I are meeting my daughter, son in law and their 2 toddlers in/near Dominical last half of January (for two weeks.) First time to Costa Rica for all of us except son in law. My son in law chose Dominical as the destination, so that is my starting point. We may join them for the whole time or just for one week of the two. My husband isn't a good swimmer so wondering if the Dominical beach is safe for him (he needs long shallow slope, mild waves so he doesn't get knocked over) and/or for the toddlers. Would Uvita beach be calmer?
I love wildlife and can't decide whether better to stay near beach or whether to stay a little up in mountains and go to beach by car. If we stayed in mountains would we need a 4x4?
We haven't decided if we are staying all together or just nearby each other (in case we don't agree) - we like funky, artsy, low key but hospitable, aren'... more »
I have two months to travel in 2014 and would like to visit all seven countries in Central America. As a retiree, my time is flexible, and I am thinking of doing this in Feb-Mar. I realize that isn't enough to really see that part of the world... so I'd appreciate your insights to some of the highlights that I should visit.
I love culture/people/history/architecture -- so I intend to spend a lot of my time visiting capitals and colonial towns. However, I don't need to see colonial towns in every single country. I also like some variety -- mountains (esp. a belching volcano), some rain forests, some waterfalls, some beaches. Finally, I am not into bars, clubs or sports. All insights appreciated. Thanks!
anyone knows if there is a direct bus from Guatemala City to Quito (ECUADOR) ?
If there is not a direct bus where should I change ?
Which bus company?
How much will cost ?
How long will take ? something like 48 hours ?
(a plane is 500 US dollars, way toooo much....)
My best friend and I have been planning on a backpacking trip for a few years now and about a month ago we decided to drop everything and buy a plane ticket to Guatemala on December 24. So, YES, we're going to be there for Christmas AND New Years! And might I add, this is our first backpacking experience ever, sooo... we're a little overly excited, but precarious, as well.
We obviously have thousands of questions, but from those who have traveled here before do you have any advice?
We're definitely planning on going to the following:
--San Marcos la Laguna*
and make our way to Honduras for some diving.
We are going to be there for 18 days, so we know we have time, but need to plan accordingly. My main concern right NOW for the beginning of the trip is *where to stay for Christmas night and where th... more »
We are a family with 2 kids ages 4 and 9. We are coming from California in December last week. We will have around 8 days in the country. We are thinking of driving inside Costa Rica if possible. It is our first visit to the country.
We are not keen on beaches. My older one loves bird watching. We are thinking it may be good idea to see the Arenal volcano area and and one or more rainforests. Since this is the first visit, I am not able to finalize the itinerary. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Anyone know who flies from Managua to San Carlos? it could be La Costena but they don't post their prices yet for 2014, so I'm wondering if there are any other choices.
I'll be in Granada so if I did decide to bus it, I know its a long trip but is it in a Long distance bus like NicaBus or will it be vans or school buses - anyone?
My boyfriend and I are planning a 2 week vacation in Costa Rica. We are flying in Liberia, and flying out of San José. Although we are at the early stages of planning our itinerary, we are considering travelling mostly in the North East region, and are debating whether we should go to Corcovado National Park or Manuel Antonio. I have a few initial questions, I would be very grateful if you guys could please give me some guidance on these few points:
1 - I've been reading many posts about beaches, there are so many options! We would like to spend a good 2-3 days at the beach, while the rest would be mostly spent enjoying the beautiful CR nature. I would love to find a nice beach that is not crowded and not too touristy, not the type wide open with lots and lots of sand and people everywhere, mainly a quiet beach, with calm beautiful water (no surf!) where we can swim and just... more »
I am supposed to fly from Cartagena, CO to San Jose, CR today, but instead I‘m stuck in Panama city now because I lost my yellow card (vaccination record), and Copa would not let me board the PTY - SJO flight. I do have an electronic copy of the record but the Copa ground staff said that the SJO immigration is really strict about it and only accept the original. I am wondering if it‘s possible for me to get a replacement yellow card here without actually getting the shots so that I dont have to wait the 10-day incubation period... which would be the extent of my planned vacation in CR. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I have the address of the vaccination center on Calle 38 y Ave Chile, but I‘d imagine it‘ll be a big building so some pointers on which counter to go to would be a great help since I don‘t speak much Spanish. :( I am stuck here all alone with no help e... more »
