Canada Branch FAQ
This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

4 days -- Banff/Lake Louise vs. Jasper
Am planning a 4-day trip to the Canadian Rockies w/ my wife (no kids) this summer (July). Flying in Calgary and renting a car.
Trying to figure out if we should go to Banff/Lake Louise and/or Jasper. Not sure we have time for both. Would like some advice.
Also, depending on what we choose, would like some advice for places to stay in each place (wife likes nice; i like nice, but reasonably priced) and great activities/day hikes to do.
Thanks
Halifax for a weekend.
What's to do? Any good metal bars?
IEC 1 year Working Holiday Visa for Canada
Hi,
My husband (25yrs) and I (23yrs) are from auckland, new zealand and currently planning to apply for a 1 year working holiday visa for Canada. We envisage heading over between Feb - March 2014, depending how long it takes to tie up things at this end.
We both work full time; i work in office admin and my husband works in the coffee industry. We have both worked in these areas since 16/17, so have several years experience. Sadly no qualifications under our belts yet though.
I decided to post on here to hopefully gather some ideas and feedback on the idea of heading over to Canada, preferably from someone who has recently been to Canada, or still lives there.
Canada is an incredibly appealing country to us; we've made many canadian friends over here in NZ and they are lovely people. We love the scenery, open spaces, history, culture and lifestyle that Canada offers. Almo...

Banff and the Rockies, Personal guide
For those who want to take the road less travelled.
I shoot several times per week. I head out from Calgary about 0300 go as far as Jasper or into B.C
Typically I go through Banff Park or Kananaskis or way up/down the Forestry trunk road.
If you're in the area and want to ride shot-gun, give me a shout.
Gas money and good conversation required.

BC road trip
Hi everyone, I'll be staying in Vancouver for 10 days in late Aug/early Sept and want to do a two or 3 day road trip (max) that takes in some of BC's natural beauty. We were looking at a trip taking in Wells Gray, or alternatively something called the Ranchlands & Rivers Circle Route, which takes in Fraser Canyon/Lytton/Fishing Highway/Kamloops/Nicola Valley and Princeton to Hope. Or perhaps a route around Vancouver Island is preferable. Spoilt for choice but not sure what is feasible/best. Do any other travellers have any ideas? Thanks! Nicky

Ferries on Canada Day Weekend and Sky Train from Vancouver Airport
Pretty much all plans completed prior to Canadian (BC & Alberta) Road Trip and have just 2 questions before I fly out:
1. I am staying on Robson Street in Vancouver. Where do I get out for Robson Stree if I am taking the Sky Train from the airport? Think I read something about it being Granville but wanted to double-check.
2. I was trying to book BC ferry on 3-4 times over the last week from Horseshoe Bay to Namaino going out on 29th of June and back on 1st of July. Finally found out last night that all reservable space is gone. Should we be okay if we turn up 1.5 hrs in advance of sailing or would one to give it more time given that we just found out that it is Canada Day weekend and all routes will be very busy?

Bag storage in Vancouver
Would anyone know where I can store my luggage while I travel with a lighter pack across Canada on the rail lines? I need to stow it somewhere for 3 weeks in August.

Dental Emergency: Have it done in Whitehorse or cheaper in Fairbanks?
I am on an Oregon to Alaska bicycle tour. I had part of a tooth filling fall out some time ago and did nothing about it. Now I am paying for it with a toothache. So far it isn't keeping me awake at night or anything but it's sensitive. I think it will just have to be yanked out cause it previously had a root canal done on it. I have no dental insurance but I know this is a relatively quick procedure which also includes x-ray of course and hopefully some strong drugs. In the US this can be reasonably cheap (compared to other dental work). I could take the bus to Fairbanks but then I would have to box up my bike and it would be a pain. does anyone know what the costs would be in Whitehorse versus Fairbanks? thanks.
Greenland
Are there such things as cheap flights from Canada- ideally Labrador, Newfoundland- to Greenland?
Tadoussac Sentier du fjord trail shuttle
Hello,
I'm looking into doing Sentier du fjord trail 12 km bit from or to Tadoussac this June.
I found a great feedback about it, and also references to shuttle service, taking hikers at the one or another end of the trail. However I couldn't find any details about that shuttle - timetable, price, stops, etc.
Could someone please help with this info?
I should have second half of Saturday for this hike, coming with the car, so my starting point could be either way, if I could get back to the car after.
Connection in New York
In January 2014 I am travelling to North America, first Los Angeles for 3 months (under the visa waiver program) then I am travelling to Toronto. As I couldn't find direct flights from Los Angeles to Toronto I am likely going to book flight with a connection in New York. So I was thinking seen as I'm in New York it would be cool to see some of the city. I saw flights arriving at New York JFK at 8am and departing New York La Guardia at 9.25pm and was just wondering what people's opinions of this would be of spending basically one day in New York. Obviously, there may be some problems such as luggage but I'm sure that could be overcome. So I just wondered what people who have been there think of this idea, in terms of would I have time to do anything... to be honest I think I would enjoy just walking around the city, anyway any thoughts or questions?
Canadian Tour Company
Am trying to organise a last minute wildlife watching holiday to Canada and am looking at a company called Fresh Tracks. I can't really find any reviews about this company. Has anyone used them before, and if so has anyone travelled on their 8 day Great Bear Lodge Adventure? Thanks for any replies in advance :-)
