Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.

We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. If you are a returning user or a Canada guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

Canada Branch FAQ

This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:

1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.

2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)

3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten... more »

Topic Locked Migrating to a new server

Hi all,

The whole of lonelyplanet.com, including Thorn Tree, is changing hosting providers in the following days. While this change takes place, Thorn Tree and the Lonely Planet website will be unavailable for a short period of time. We will communicate the exact time nearer the date. This migration will hopefully be a matter of hours but we have a lot of Thorntree content to move! We will do everything we can to cause minimal disruption to users. You will be able to chart the progress of the work while the site is down through our Twitter account.

Thanks,

Zabba

Offering a ride from Calgary to Vancouver, May 24th

Hey all, I'm going to be driving from Calgary to Vancouver on the 24th of May, and if any travellers are wanting to make the trip, they're more than welcome to join. I only have room for three people, and we would all split the gas costs.

I'd be looking to leave around 4:30-5:00am, maybe stop for a bit for lunch, and be in Vancouver by around 4pm.

Reply if interested!

My base will be in Toronto but i would love to see other places while there. I heard Vancouver is a lovely place to visit. What about Nova Scotia? Not sure really where to go, could anyone give me ideas of the best places to visit? Thanks

Travelling to Victoria, BC

I will be going to Victoria, BC from June 2nd to June 6th, and will be staying at the University of Victoria Residences. I will have a couple of hours each day, and maybe one full day to do some site seeing. I have a few questions:

1) Has anyone stayed at the University of Victoria campus residences? Your opinions please.

2) I will also need the names and addresses of some good places to eat. I love vegetarian food, Indian and Ethiopian cuisines. Hakka and Middle Eastern are great too. Nothing too expensive. I will be eating on and off campus.

3) I enjoy art galleries and museums, also just walking around the city and enjoying the scenery. I love parks as well, and would like to do some window shopping. Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you!

Midnight arrival at Calgary International Airport

I will be flying from USA to Calgary International Airport in mid-July, arriving at 23.55. The hotel I have reserved is at 16th Avenue NW (motel district, I think). Is there any public transport I can take to the city at this awkward hour? If I have to take a taxi, how much would it cost?

Thanks for any advice.

Nelson, British Columbia

So what are the best pubs in Nelson, BC? Also, I've read that it's full of hippies. I'm going to be there in the summer and and was curious if there are any music festivals in the area in July or August.

Thanks.

Working Whistler 2013/2104

Hi - is anyone planning on going out to work at Whistler for the 2013/2014 season? I'm in the UK and looking in to it. Ideally I'd like a job sorted before I leave here but the only way to do that seems to be with one of the agencies who charge you up front to organise it.

Does anyone have any advice?

Also, I'm 31. Am I going to feel really old in Whistler or is there a wide age range of people working there?

Cheers

Matane Godbout ferry, Quebec

Hi all

I'm told it is necessary to book this ferry. But whenever I try to go to the website my browser tells me it's unsafe. When I ignored this once the page didn't exist. Has the website moved? A search for it failed to find a new one. If anyone can let me know I'd be very grateful.

Cheers

Questions re: Canada TRP applications

Short background story; skip if you'd like: I'm a US citizen who a year ago got himself drunk on NYE and ended up blacked-out and came to handcuffed for an altercation with a police officer. Eventually plea-bargained to a misdemeanor (in the US) assault charge and given a suspended jail sentence whose deadline is about to pass. My only arrest ever. Fast-forward a year, and I'm dating my dream girl...but just my luck she is now working in Canada for a couple years and is neither US nor Canadian citizen so it's not easy for her to just come back and visit. It looks like it will be December before she can get her US visa, and that wait will be difficult on both of us.

So I want to apply for my Canada TRP, and know full well that I will likely be rejected. But I feel that I have to try anyway.

Questions:

1) The checklist says to get state & local criminal background checks along... more »

Driving southern BC

Hi there,

We are 2 adults and 2 kids (aged 12 and 10) and we will be driving from Vancouver through Kamloops/Golden/Lake Louise/Calgary and onto Saskatoon to see family on the first leg of our trip in mid June.

With driving back from Saskatoon to Vancouver the first week in July, we were thinking it would be nice to drive an alternate route and were considering driving the Crowsnest Pass and onto Fernie/Cranbrook > Osoyoos (friends there) > Vancouver.

Is this a wise thing to do? We will have 4 days ( 3 nights) to make the trip from Saskatoon to Vancouver. We were hoping to stay in Osoyoos on night 3, before we drive into Vancouver on day 4.

Any suggestions? Does this sound do-able? Any particular tips on things/places the kids might enjoy. Is the scenery good? Roads decent?

Is Fernie to Osyoos possible in one day?
