Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. If you are a returning user or a Canada guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

probably dead, or at the very least scratching the dry earth looking for food.
Time is running out, according to Prince Charles, who spoke at Copenhagen yesterday. He repeated the often-stated claim that we are 7 short years away from the "point of crisis", and that the survival of the species is in peril. Nice that Charles took the time to fly in on his private jet to make those proclamations.
So I wonder if, in seven years, when we look around and see that the world has not collapsed, that the seas have not risen up and drowned us, and that pretty much nothing has changed, will all these alarmists stand up and say they were wrong? This is yet again another example of how stupid the environmental movement is - stick to your 20 or 30 year doom-and-gloom scenarios. 7 years is too short and we will all remember what you said when the time comes. Which reminds me, Al Gore said tha...

Hi all,
Im looking at hiring a car in Canada going from Vancouver to Calgary. Im after the hire for 4 full days and it seems very, very expensive! I realise its always going to be more to get a 1 way hire, but was just wondering if anyone had a good experience of a particular company? I got a quote from Hertz for £192....and the cheapest so far has been £180. There doesnt really seem to be an alternative though as no buses seem to run from Banff (which is where im going from Vancouver) to Calgary.
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.
Nicola

We're looking at traveling around Canada in the spring/summer of 2010. Can anyone suggest a good campervan/RV rental company? And approximate price per day? We need a 5 berth.
Thanks heaps!

Hi,
I am looking to rent for the summer of 2010 for a month or so, possibly longer depending on the rate and circumstances in NF. I am not selective about the region insofar as it is in an ultra quiet, rural setting that is also of biking distance to the local grocery store (not convenience store). I currently reside in the U.S., and the main purpose of my stay in NF would be to retreat, recharge and replenish from the hustle and bustle of life here, as well as explore the possibility of living in NF at least part of the year. Work is not an issue as I am a self-employed writer.
Please feel free to send me a private message on here if you have any leads.
Thanks ahead!
p.s. No bummer posts please.

Hello, I am an Iranian man - 31 years old, and I am interested in applying for the Canadian Tourist visa. I have been to the Canadian Embassy in Tehran but it is extremely difficult to get any information there, so I am hoping that someone on this forum will be able to guide me and give me some advice. For example, what documents do I need to apply, is it possible for an Iranian to apply for a tourist visa, and with a tourist visa can I work in Canada?
I really look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you

What are the customs procedures for checking on gifts being brought into the country by foreigners? Are the customs authorities strict about enforcing the limit of $60CAN? Thanks.

did they colonize our country? Particularly Ontario.
The weather is crap everywhere.
We need to annex a Caribbean island and call it New Canada.
... and before all you humorless schmucks write with real answers, yes I do know why we were colonized.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some good information about fruit picking in BC. Is it easy to obtain under-the-counter work? Can anyone recommend any good farms to work at? Any information would be helpful.
Thanks!

I have a 19yr old daughter who has been working - unpaid - on a ranch in Montana.
She is wishing to return to the ranch for about 6 months next year, possibly on a work visa. She has mentioned a "H2B Visa" whatever that is.
How difficult will it be for her to obtain a 6 month visa of any type. Next year she is hoping to get paid - albeit not much.
Thanks for any help and advice.

Hello!
I am desperate to go to Canada for 4-5 months. I do not have the funds to travel for this amount of time without working so was hoping to get a working holiday visa. However I am an Irish passport holder resident in the UK so it looks like I am not eligible for the English BUNAC program or the Irish USIC program. Does anyone have any idea if there is another working holiday visa program, if there is another visa type that I might be eligible for (I do not have a job offer in Canada), or if there is anyway around working restrictions on a tourist visa?
Thank you very much for any advice.
