Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. If you are a returning user or a Canada guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.
Comments about Lonely Planet Guidebooks:

This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

Which is the better guidebook to Canada--Lonely Planet or the Eyewitness Travel Guide? (I'm especially interested in Vancouver.) Many thanks.

Hello all,
We are currently in Vancouver putting together material for our blog: http://travelinsider.qantas.com.au/qantas_travel_blog.htm
We are looking for "insider" tips - best local bars, restaurants, galleries, etc.
We have already done a few posts - any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Canada is being criticized by some for not setting aggressive enough targets for carbon emissions. But what with the recent exposure of data manipulation that has been going on by "scientists" at the Climate Research Institute, the mainstream media is finally starting to report both sides of the story.
After several years of refusing to report any views contrary to the nonsense put forth by Al Gore and his disciples, we are seeing more and more newspapers starting to print the opposing views. And journalists that have been insisting that "the science is settled" are suddenly starting to question this science (something they've been shamefully remiss about in the past).
Human-induced global warming will eventually go down in history as just one more example of human folly, along with the impending ice age reported in the 70's, Y2K, SARS, bird flu, and H1N1.

Hi,
Quite often people ask about the Aurora.
Night sky guy has added a aurora map to his site.
It covers the pole and gets updated automatically.

Just spent a night in Cabano, QC this past weekend and thought I'd mention this beautiful little town on here. It's a very small town of about 3000, halfway between Edmundston, NB and Riviere-du-Loup, QC on the Trans-Canada Highway. I don't know much about what winter activities there are (there's probably some cross-country skiing), but it's a charming little town to walk around in, especially with snow covered surroundings. It's right on Lake Temiscouata, which is peaceful and stunning with mountains in the background. Cute little shops and a waterfront park on Rue Commerciale line along the coast. I'd imagine that the summer is beautiful there, where one can hang out in the park, go to the beach, do water activities on the lake, hike and do all other activities with the nature. Don't worry if you don't know French, the people there are very friendly and most of them know English. I... more »

Hi all,
I'm an Australian trying to get a Canadian Work visa (yes, another one!!). I'm wondering if it is possible to get the visa without being in Australia?
I'm in South America at the moment and will be travelling overland to Canada. Where and how is the best way to get one?
Thanks for your help guys.

Hi,
I was hoping to pick up a reasonably cheap camper van once I get to Vancouver later this year. I think I'll be able to find one on craigslist or similar. I have a few questions though, to anyone who has any knowledge about this stuff...
1) Do I need an International Drivers permit. I've read here that I don't. I'm Irish btw. I've a full clean license with 3 years driving experience.
2) Do I need an address in Canada/BC, or will like a hostel address or something do?
3) I'm planning on driving into the States and down the west coast, well thats the dream. Anyone know if this is legal/possible. Will BC insurance cover that. Will there be any problems on the US side? Canadian plates? Lack of International Drivers Permit?
Any help/experience/stories very much appreciated...
Thanks in advance,

Hi
We are from Australia and are going to Canada at the end of next year to do a 6 month working holiday in the ski fields. Once we have finished working we want to spend about 6 weeks travelling around the USA & was wondering if we are still eligible for the visa waiver program to enter the USA or if we have to apply for a separate visa.
Any help would be much appreciated!

I'll be in the Surrey, British Columbia, area within a few weeks time and I need some information on reasonably priced accommodation, (for two people). It will probably be for a 5 to 7 day stay.
Thanks in advance. :)

I have some family living in Cold Lake, AB. I've been to visit, and though it's a lovely town, I'm sure it's sleepy during it's long winter. I'm wondering if anyone knows of a really nice restaurant, or lodge, great food, somewhere I could get a gift certificate for the couple as an x-mas gift, for a place they may not otherwise go. I would be willing to even pay for a night/weekend getaway for them, if the mood was right and the food was good too.
Does anyone have any experience with this in the Cold Lake area? I shy away from Edmonton, as I know the drive is a pain for them, and a dinner out to Edmonton would take all day. I want the gift to be leisurely, and hopefully luxurious is some way.

Shame I couldn't get the cheese curds.
I wonder if it will sell?

Hi guys,
Having previously posted re vancouver, arctic cruise and hawaii as a honeymoon combo, we have decided to get real and narrow it down to Vancouver, and perhaps travelling to Banff and Lake Louise etc and then Hawaii (still a very big trip!)
Just looking for advice re best place to go in Hawaii, would love some fab quiet beaches, not overdeveloped or tacky... but also with some nice resorts ( willing to splash out on accommodation as its honeymoon!).. I know I know, Im kind of looking for the best of both worlds!
Also whats the best way to travel around Western Canada if we have about a week? Have heard about trains but what would be the advantage of this over driving?
Really appreciate your feedback peeps, thanks in advance xxx

Has anyone taken the bus across Canada? (I'm thinking Toronto to Calgary)
How did you find the experience? What do you do about food? Are there decent rest stops where you can get off the bus and stretch your legs for a good while? How do you NOT go stark raving mad sitting in a bus seat for 3 days?

I am new to travelling, and next year in May will be landing in Vancouver, and wanting to travel down to Seattle to overnight to visit a friend, and hopefully go on the Boeing factory tour. Has anyone done this? Can you give details on how to get to Seattle economically, how much it costs to get into the Boeing factory, how much time to allow etc? Then I need to visit some friends in Calgary...am I best to fly direct from Seattle, or go back to Vancouver and fly on to Calgary form there? Thanks in advance for your help.
