Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. If you are a returning user or a Canada guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

Two adults and our 16-year-old son heading to Montreal for five days. (Have spent time in Quebec City, but never in Montreal.) Looking for suggestions for good, authentic, cheap, fun eats of all kinds, art, music, cross-country skiing and other activities. Will be staying near the Grande Bibliothèque, but happy to go farther afield for adventures. Best bets?

Has anyone heard anything about the potential strike at Vancouver airport? Last I heard was that they were "threatening" a holiday strike, but I've not seen any news since then.

Hi there,
i am traveling to USA and Canada next year for a year, and wondering about the best option for a money card that has low or no transaction fees... What bank is the best? i am currently living in Australia and would prefer to set it up before i left rather than open an account while i was over there. I have heard HSBC is a good one...?
Thanks.

Hi, I'm going to Vancouver for the first time next week. I'm flying there with my girlfriend on December 25. It's Christmas Day and I want to take her somewhere nice for dinner... I'd like to go somewhere romantic, or at least somewhere with a fantastic view. She's a vegetarian, so going to a steak house or seafood restaurant isn't recommended. I've looked at the menus for a few of the more upscale restaurants in the area, but they seem to be very weak for vegetarian choices. Vij's looks promising, but I hear that they are ridiculously busy and don't take reservations. Going there on Christmas Day is probably going to be unsuccessful (might save it for another night). Naam's is supposed to be good for vegetarians, but they're closed on Christmas Day.
We're staying in North Vancouver and have a car, so we can get around. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to be able...

In 05/06 I spent a year in Canada though the Bunac work abroad programme (as a non student). I have been speaking to an Australian friend who tells me that Canada have massively opened up their working holiday opportunities. I cannot find much about this online so thought some of you could help me.
Is there anyway, as a UK citizen under 30, I am able to spend another year (or two) in Canada on a working holiday programme.
Many thanks in advance

Hello. I'm trying to find a decent restaurant to treat my family for dinner.
Has anyone tried the Banana Leaf malaysian restaurant on Broadway in Vancouver?
Since I haven't been there before, I need some advice.
What are the portions like and would any of you recommend it?
What are some suggestions for dishes at Banana Leaf?
What would a decent full course meal look like for let say, 6 people?
Thanks!

I am amazed at how often I still see this archaic form of temperature measurement still used in this country... And it seems to be increasing. From electronic bank time/temperature boards to several of our local radio stations, I am seeing more and more dual temperature readings given... Most people under 45 don't know this system. Are we slowly going back to it? Why?
I'm in my mid forties... I don't know Fahrenheit because I was not raised with it and I don't use it. I realize many of the older folk/right-wing/cowboy-farmer crowd in this country heart-warmingly refer to this system as "The good old way to measure the temperature", their numbers are rapidly dwindling with no one to replace them. I also pay no bother to Fahrenheit because no one else in the world uses it except America.
I found it odd to be in Southwestern Ontario and have most of the Windsor/Chatham/Sarnia r...

Is it our currency? Do Americans tolerate Canadian coins in their change willingly?
If it's not our currency, should it not be made illegal to use it?

Hi all,
Im looking at hiring a car in Canada going from Vancouver to Calgary. Im after the hire for 4 full days and it seems very, very expensive! I realise its always going to be more to get a 1 way hire, but was just wondering if anyone had a good experience of a particular company? I got a quote from Hertz for £192....and the cheapest so far has been £180. There doesnt really seem to be an alternative though as no buses seem to run from Banff (which is where im going from Vancouver) to Calgary.
Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.
Nicola

We're looking at traveling around Canada in the spring/summer of 2010. Can anyone suggest a good campervan/RV rental company? And approximate price per day? We need a 5 berth.
Thanks heaps!

Hi,
I am looking to rent for the summer of 2010 for a month or so, possibly longer depending on the rate and circumstances in NF. I am not selective about the region insofar as it is in an ultra quiet, rural setting that is also of biking distance to the local grocery store (not convenience store). I currently reside in the U.S., and the main purpose of my stay in NF would be to retreat, recharge and replenish from the hustle and bustle of life here, as well as explore the possibility of living in NF at least part of the year. Work is not an issue as I am a self-employed writer.
Please feel free to send me a private message on here if you have any leads.
Thanks ahead!
p.s. No bummer posts please.

Hello, I am an Iranian man - 31 years old, and I am interested in applying for the Canadian Tourist visa. I have been to the Canadian Embassy in Tehran but it is extremely difficult to get any information there, so I am hoping that someone on this forum will be able to guide me and give me some advice. For example, what documents do I need to apply, is it possible for an Iranian to apply for a tourist visa, and with a tourist visa can I work in Canada?
I really look forward to hearing from you!
Thank you
