Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

We are planning a family holiday to Canada in October 2010 and wanted to get some feedback about the
weather and driving at this time of year.
We were thinking of flying from LA to Calgary then driving to Vancouver stopping in at Banff, Jasper,
Lake Lousie etc on our way. It would be around 17th October and I know that would be the start of winter road closures.
We would have about 2 weeks in Canada so hopefully enough time to see some great sights.
Would love any advice or tips you have.

Is there any update regarding the passenger ferry service from Fortune, Newfoundland to the neighbouring French islands of Saint-Pierre & Miquelon?
There was a regular ferry - the "Atlantic Jet" - operated by the company SPM Express. However, several months ago the company's website indicated that the service was suspended due to an engine problem with the ship. Now, the company website redirects you to the islands' tourism site, where it says that "the service is no longer available; check back for updates."
Is there any information out there about restoring this service? Or are flights from Air Saint-Pierre the only regular way to get to the islands at present?

Just looking for some advice really. Basically me and a friend are currently up at Big White in Kelowna working the ski season until around the end of april. after which were havnt decided what to do. As we arrived in vancouver and then came here, we would like to see alot more of canada. and are therefor planning the trip for once we are finished here.
we will probably look at buying/sharing a van and driving across to the east coast (any suggestions of must-see sights along the way are more than welcome) until the money runs out.
we are then thinking of staying in a city some where in the east (ontario, new brunswick, newfoundland etc maybe not quebec as our french isnt the highest standard and an extended stay might get difficult)
here is where we need the advice really. what cities would be the best to stay in for a month or two? not particually fussy where exactly as oth...

I'll be spending two weeks over Christmas at my parents' place in Victoria. My parents and friends will all be working over the holidays so I want to find some things I can do during the days to keep myself busy. I will have a car but prefer not to go further up-island than, say, Jordan River or Metchosin.
Can anyone suggest outdoor activities for me to do on the southern island? I love kayaking, mountain climbing, hiking, snow-shoeing, cycling, swimming, etc. Any ideas, websites, tips, etc, would be really helpful! Thanks!

I am a 38 year old male resident of the uk with a british biometric passport. Unfortunatly I had a pretty mis-spent youth and a have several convictions for canabis possession, fraud, and taking a veicle and driving with no licence or insurance for which I spent time in prison 3 times for periods no longer than 9 months. all of these convictions are spent under the uk reabilitation of offender act 1974 and now as a mature and responsible adult I have a very good job with a very large company.
I am hoping to travel to canada in June 2010 with friend for a 2 week mountain bike holiday in vancouver but I am very worried that I will not be able to enter the country due to my previous convictions. I have tried to find information regarding this but the information I find on the web varies so much.
Can anyone help me with this or direct me to the best place for advice as the Canadian Hig...

I’ve recently spent 5 nights and 6 days independently in Churchill and just want to post a few things about it, so as to possibly assist some of you going there in the future. This post is aimed at independent travellers who just plan on turning up in Churchill with no reservations., although some of this information might be relevant to others of you. As with most people, I wanted to do the polar bear thing and some of my information won’t apply at other times of the year. I’m also aware that due to the global recession thingy, then it’s possible that accommodation was easier to come by for me and that may not be the same at other times.
Transport: air fares seem to be ridiculous, to say the least. There are no roads to Churchill. The road is OK to Thompson, from where you can catch the train. As of now, there are 3 trains a week. If you have a decent 4 wheel drive, you ca...

Am I the only one that questions the term "Olympic athlete" when discussion luge or bobsled participants?
I mean come on, other than running a few steps at the start you simply sit or lie down on the sled.
Those sports, other than being fun to watch because of the speed involved, are the most useless sports in the Olympics. And the fact that they required these massive tracks to be built should be reason enough to discontinue including them.
Every time I hear an athlete whine about not getting government support for their sport I say a quiet thank you to my government.

Just curious what TT'ers thoughts are on Princeton BC as a town.
Is the atmosphere similar to the east Kootenay or more like the Okanagan?
Is the town livable? I would like to hear your experiences and observations.
Thx

My new film "Maple Leaf National Parks” transports you to five of Canada’s most famous Rocky Mountain National Parks in the Banff-Lake Louise Area. It features splendid waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, mountains, and other amazing scenery, plus local wildlife. The film’s National Park headliners are Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho, and Mount Revelstoke. Also learn how Canadians distinguish themselves from Americans.

Hi all, after a bit of advice. Im planning a trip to Canada next spring time and am having some major difficulties in booking transport between montreak and burlingtonl. There are greyhound buses which go there, which is fine, but they wont give me an online ticket and they only deliver to addresses in Canada / US - I live in the UK....Does anyone know if there is a way around this? I dont really want to wait to buy tickets til i get there as the price is a whole lot higher than if you buy in advance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Heya, need some advice, and no idea where to post this thread - so it's going to Canada.
I have 2 weeks off work in February - my current plan is to visit Ubatuba in Brasil, and spend time with a friend, and stay there for a (relatively) quiet Carnaval, chill on the beach, etc.
Alternative suggestions appreciated.
Looking for somewhere warm, preferably with beaches. Cool culture a must. Interesting "tourist attractions" a bonus. Ease of travel a definite plus
Have been to most of CA and SA, Turkey, Morocco, Israel.
Don't want to spend more than 12 hours flying (each way to/from Toronto)
Thanks!
p.s. If it matters, I'm planning to fly carry-on only
p.p.s. Brasil may be the best option, I'm just used to always going somewhere new.

Hi all, we all know that Montreal is a great place to plan your vacation and this would only mean that the city is equipped with the necessities that a visitor requires to make their trip wonderful. I would like to have some reviews on the places of staying there on a visit to the city.

Hi,
Myself, my wife, my brother, and my sister-in-law are planning a 2 week holiday to Canada next summer (2010). We will be flying into Toronto from London, but want to spend most of the trip in Saskatchewan.
Can anyone please recommend good places to visit. I have heard of Prince Albert national park, Lake Louise, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon etc. We would want to do some outdoor activities during the daytime (hiking, kayaking etc) and we enjoy eating out. I think we would want a mix of relaxing in the wilderness, and staying in towns with more action going on. i.e. 2-3 night stays in different places.
I was thinking of flying from Toronto to Winnipeg, hiring a SUV etc and driving up.
Also, we were thinking of doing this in August. Is this a good month to go? Are there any big events/festivals etc at any time over the summer that we might want to take in?
All advice very mu...

If you need your winter skiing fix all year round South America is the destination between Late June and early October. The Andes offer first class skiing on both low and high altitude mountains and volcanoes. Multi resort ski tours are very popular in South America and suitable for couples, small groups and single travellers.

Hiya,
I've been checking out zuji.com, mobissimo.com and cheapoair.com but was curious as to whether anyone has come across any great deals. I'm in Kamloops, BC and would be flying to Melbourne, Australia. The lowest cost of seen is $1,370 one way.
This may be one less Aussie in Canada!
Cheers.
