Welcome to the Thorn Tree's Canada branch.
We hope you find plenty of useful information about travelling to Canada here. It is highly recommended that new users check out the Canada FAQ thread before posting a new thread as you may find many of the answers you seek there. It also contains helpful information about how to search the forum and advice for how to post your questions. If you are a returning user or a Canada guru, please help us keep the FAQ thread up-to-date by adding important information which is absent, or pointing out information which is no longer being represented accurately.

This thread is intended to contain information useful to people travelling to Canada - please feel free to add anything relevant to it! Before we start though, here's some advice from the TT team:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask what to do in Toronto, whether to go visit Niagara Falls on their way around the world, and whether it's possible to work under the table/overstay a tourist visa. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2. Ask one question at a time.
2. Be specific. You might include: How much do you have to spend? ("reasonable" doesn't cut it) budget or up-scale - remember the Canadian dollar is the currency used in Canada, so that's what people will assume when they reply ;)
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is inten...

Tinned Poutine sauce, Baron brand. Only around C$2!
Shame I couldn't get the cheese curds.
I wonder if it will sell?

Hi guys,
Having previously posted re vancouver, arctic cruise and hawaii as a honeymoon combo, we have decided to get real and narrow it down to Vancouver, and perhaps travelling to Banff and Lake Louise etc and then Hawaii (still a very big trip!)
Just looking for advice re best place to go in Hawaii, would love some fab quiet beaches, not overdeveloped or tacky... but also with some nice resorts ( willing to splash out on accommodation as its honeymoon!).. I know I know, Im kind of looking for the best of both worlds!
Also whats the best way to travel around Western Canada if we have about a week? Have heard about trains but what would be the advantage of this over driving?
Really appreciate your feedback peeps, thanks in advance xxx
Has anyone taken the bus across Canada? (I'm thinking Toronto to Calgary)
How did you find the experience? What do you do about food? Are there decent rest stops where you can get off the bus and stretch your legs for a good while? How do you NOT go stark raving mad sitting in a bus seat for 3 days?

I am new to travelling, and next year in May will be landing in Vancouver, and wanting to travel down to Seattle to overnight to visit a friend, and hopefully go on the Boeing factory tour. Has anyone done this? Can you give details on how to get to Seattle economically, how much it costs to get into the Boeing factory, how much time to allow etc? Then I need to visit some friends in Calgary...am I best to fly direct from Seattle, or go back to Vancouver and fly on to Calgary form there? Thanks in advance for your help.

In late June next year myself and my wife plan to spend three weeks in BC enjoying the nature. We will start and end our trip in Vancouver and want to rent a small RV. We would like to learn from the experiences of other travellers. Tips and suggestions re. routes, types of RVs and rental companies would be highly appreciated

Seeing as this site is visited by knowledgeable people who give a lot of advice on what to do in Canada who most likely have considerable experience traveling abroad, I thought I'd turn the question around and ask where you would go on holiday during the olympic games if you lived in Vancouver.
I've been thinking about Greece, Mexico and Hawaii off the top of my head, but I'm wondering if I should look farther afield. The Caribbean? Costa Rica?

Hello good folks,
I’m hoping someone can help me answer the following question.
Next May, me and my travelling buddy are planning an Alaskan cruise from Vancouver (BC, Canada) to Seward (Alaska, USA), on arrival we plan on hiring/renting a car in Anchorage (Alaska), BUT we want to drive it one way back to Vancouver over about a week long period.
So, is it going to be a problem, hiring a car one way, picking up in a US state and then dropping it off in Canadian Vancouver? I’ve looked at the Hertz rent-a-car website and done Google searches, both of which suggest this isn’t going to be plain sailing or that it may not be possible at all.
Thanks for any help/advice.
Paul

Hi Everyone,
My partner and I are thinking of heading to Whistler for New Year's Eve (Dec 30th - Jan 4th ish). We'll be flying out of Toronto to Vancouver, and then probably taking a bus trip out to the mountain.
Does anyone have any recommendations of good websites for all inclusive packages for Whistler? Places we should stay? For a hotel I think we are looking at paying around $100/night..or that's all that I could seem to find right now
We've both been out there before, but never for New Year's Eve. I've tried expedia.ca, redtag etc...but they only let me book my trip from Toronto to Van City. Yes, we will land in Van City - but I'm looking for a full package
YYZ to YVR
Travel time out to Whistler
Hotel
ROUNDTRIP
I'm looking for a website that will give me an all inclusive package for the above info.
Looking forward to hearing some recommendations!

Hi All,
I have just spent the last two hours trying to find my answer however I couldn't find anything so I am hoping someone on here maybe able to help me.
My friend and I are looking to drive from Montreal, Canada into Austin, Texas in mid March next year.
I've contacted many car rental companies however they have all advised they do not do one way journeys. Is this because we are crossing country borders or they simply just want people to return the car to where they go it from?
Is it at all possible to do this journey using public transport (ie. bus or train) rather than flights?
Buying a cheap and nasty car to use is out of the question as the insurance and other legal requirements would just be too much hassle and rather expensive.
Hoping someone out there can help with some advice.
Thanks everyone and happy travelling.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi, my name is Bar Avni I'm planing to do ice climbing course during the next few months. I have been thinking to fly to Canda for that ( I saw beautiful photos of lovely peaks over there). Do you recommend to do course like that in Canda? Where? which company to choose?

We are interested to hear some first hand response to the 2009 "Top 10 Beaches" beaches selected by "Dr. Beach" -- actually Stephen P. Leatherman, the director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research.
The Florida-based sun, sand and water purity authority makes his annual selection after judging 50 criteria, including water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand quality and appearance, safety and facilities at the beaches he and his team visit.
Keep in mind that Dr. Beach does not repeat past winners in his annual list, so he has to roam far and wide to compile it. However, he does return to beaches that he has rejected in past years when improvements have been made.
Here is the 2009 list -- let me know what you think, especially if you've taken the kids here.
1. Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii
2. Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Florida
3. Coopers...
