ABN, sole trader & the 417 Visa

Hi,

I have a friend who is coming over to Australia on a 417 (working holiday visa). She is a tatooist and works for herself in the uk so is planning on obtaining an ABN to do the same while on holiday. Now I know that if she was employed directly by someone she could work for 6 months on the 417 visa, but how long can she work for herself. Can she only use her ABN for 6 months? I cant seem to find the answer anywhere.

Bar or Hotel with ESPN in Hobart, Tasmania?

Does anyone know of a bar or hotel that carries the ESPN channel? My parents are traveling there this weekend and desperately want to watch the Oklahoma-Notre Dame game and I know it will be shown on the ESPN channel on Foxtel. My web searches haven't produced any results except a backpackers hostel, which isn't quite the best scene for my 60 year old parents. I'm looking either for a bar or hotel. I think they would be willing to stay in a particular hotel for the night if the room had ESPN. Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice you can offer.

North Island

I only have one week of my travels left and am spending it in North Island, arriving in Auckland on Saturday. I have booked a hostel for 2 nights so far - any suggestions as what to do before going back to drizzly dark London - as you can imagine hardly any money left!!

trip in November

Hi,

I am from Melbourne and I am planning a 1 week trip with friends (3 guys in our mid-20s) in November. We are looking for nice weather, great beaches, nightlife, etc. We are still hesitating about the destination though. We thought of Cairns but it may be a little humid at that time, and the sea full of jelly fishes :(

It'd be fantastic if you could suggest us any good plan (Gold coast?) !

Thanks!

Labouring/Farm Work

Hi there,

me and two friends are flying out to Melbourne early December looking for work, currently we know two people working out there in a small town called Griffith about 6 hours (500km) on the train from Melbourne.

Does anyone have any advice in terms of whether we need to sort out work before we leave? Also if anyone has any experience with this kind of work then maybe which places to avoid etc and which places you might recommend for such work? And what this kind of work is generally like?

Thanks any info is much appreciated

Where to Pick Cherries, advice needed

I am headed to Australia mid Nov. I am going to pick cherries there on a working holiday visa. I am an experienced cherry picker and I am looking for advice on where to pick cherries. Where not to pick cherries? I have some general info already from the net and word of mouth, so some first hand experience could be very helpful. I am really looking to hear about specific farms. How was the money? Etc... Should I head straight to TAS? or work around VIC for a month or so, then head to TAS? I will also have a van and I am wondering how easy it is to stay on site at most orchards? Any advice would be wonderful. Cheers!

Flightfox - anyone used them out of Australia?

Howdy,

I'm interested to hear from anyone who has booked a flight with Flightfox out of Australia. I want to know if they actually do what they say they'll do, that is find the absolute best airfare deal around for a price lower than anything else on the market thru other providers. I've looked at their site, read their FAQ's but am still not certain about the way they work. If anyone can explain it to me "like I'm a two year old" I'd appreciate it. Any examples of how much $$ you saved by using Flightfox would also be great or, if you were able to save more with another provider, those details would be welcome.

Cheers...

Danny.

North Island Beach Town Recommendations

I'm going to be in New Zealand for the next couple months. I'm spending most of my time tramping on the South Island but would really like to finish off my trip with two or three days at a beach town kicking back and playing in the sun and ocean back on the North Island. (This would be in mid-December.) A few places have caught my eye as a potential destination...

o Great Barrier Island
o Bay of Islands
o Coromandel's east coast
o Raglan
o Bay of Plenty
o Waiheke (although this seems like more of a day trip from Auckland)
o Poor Knights Island (although this seems like more of a diving-centric destination)

Above all else, I'm looking for beautiful white sand beaches with dry, hot weather and swimmable water. Novice surfing options are a plus thought not essential. Youthful nightlife is another plus - I'm a single guy traveling solo - though again not essential. Any r... more »

Culinary school advice

Does anyone have any first hand experiences with culinary schools in Australia? Is there any difference (other than price) between the courses offered at TAFE and those offered at Le Cordon Bleu? I will be coming to Australia in January and will be attending culinary school. Becuase we will be coming on a student visa, I will need to pay for my two teenagers to go to school as well. Some states are more expensive for the kids schools so it actually adds up to be the same for Le Cordon Bleu in Adelaide or a TAFE program in another state. I can't find any info on the net and would appreciate any advice.

Need some help deciding

Hello, my family and I will be moving to Australia in January and we are not sure where we want to live yet. I will be attending culinary school and we will be coming on a visa. My husband is still working on locating a job so we don't have a city we have to go to based on that. We have two teenagers aged 13 and 15 who will be attending public secondary school. They both love to surf and play rugby but want to be somewhere where there is not a cold winter. We are coming from a cold city and want to get away from that. Overall safety of the city is also important. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

About to embark on my travels...

Hello there!

I just signed up, so newbie alert!
I'm 22yrs old, and I'm from North East England. In just over 2 weeks I will be jetting off with my female friend (also 22yrs old) for our first ever jaunt abroad. We are going: Australia (until January 9th)>Vietnam>Laos>Cambodia>Thailand (jumping between all 4 from January 9th to April 13th)>India (April 13th to May 30th) between November 8th and May 30th.

Would be great to meet anyone who is also going to be going along these place, or to get any tips from seasoned travellers on these places listed.

For Australia, we're going Melbourne>Adelaide>Alice Springs>Cairns>Brisbane (then I'm going to Adelaide for christmas with a relative) then onto Sydney for new years eve.

We don't really have a plan for the other countries, other than places that we'd like to go to. We have an abundance of travel guides and suggestions from frie... more »
