Fruitpicking

Hey everyone,

Can antyone help with advice on fruitpicking, or farm work or whatever I can do to extend my visa to get a 2nd year one Down Under. I was going to apply for the Skilled Migrants visa but after yesterday's announcement from the government, seem no one is going to get one of them any time soon!

Gold Coast Theme Parks & transport

Any recommendations? We are a family group of 18 (7 kids ranging from 6-13yrs) who will be enjoying the Gold Coast (staying at Broadbeach) for 9 days at the end of March this year. So far we have all agreed (no mean feat) to visit Seaworld, Currumbin and drive up to Mt Tambourine. We are trying to decide which is the better theme park - Dreamworld or Movieworld (we will go to whichever water park ties in with the park of choice).

Also, can you get cheap deals on the theme parks on the back of supermarket dockets? One of our party visited Surfers 8 yrs ago and this was the case then. We know about the 10% discount on the myfun website, but wondered if there were better deals.

We haven't finalised transport arrangements either, and are looking at either hiring cars/vans or doing bus passes. We would really only need (as the cost of a tour would be prohibitive) the vehicles for o... more »

I already get airport rage, without these proposed additional extras. The absolute stupidity of insisting everything be stored in the overhead locker on the aircraft, & then cabin staff demanding that you fill out a 6 font immigration arrival card, when both your reading glasses & ballpoint pen, are in aforementioned locker, is already enough to make my blood boil. This, after standing in stupid queues for over an hour or 2. What's next? A rectal scan?

Oh wait. They'll confiscate all pencils, pens and writing implements, in case some religious zealot shoves aforementioned writing implement, through someone's eyesocket. It's only a matter of time. Me, I haven't got the stomach, to do such a heinious thing. But I'm sure there are Al Qaeda followers who wouldn't think t... more »

Driving in NZ at night

Is it safe to drive on country NZ roads at night, or do you tend to crash into large animals like in Oz?

Locals fed up with freedom campers. Ban likely?

The following is an excerpt from 'Mountain Scene', Queenstown's daily newspaper. Similar sentiments have also been expressed by Coromandel local authorities.

"Queenstown mayor, Clive Geddes, has told 'Mountain Scene' that he has had a "gutsful" of freedom campersand is calling for a total ban.

Police were called in to move one lot on a week ago after spending one month 'dossing' around the Wakatipu for free. Rubbish and human waste is found regularly around free camping 'no go ' zones at Frankton Beach & Lake Hayes - despite adequate toilets & nearby rubbish bins. Geddes believes that the only solution is to ban free camping altogether.

'The people who freedom camp without onboard facilities and use the outdoors as a toilet space & the rivers & creeks to wash in are doing so in the full knowledge that what they are doing is wrong. For some reason they think that as a visitor... more »

EFTPOS Commonwealth Bank card readers-Canadian Visa Declined

Canadian just returned from 6 week trip around Australia. Had problems with Commonwealth Bank EFTPOS terminals not accepting my Canadian Scotiabank VISA card with chip and pin. Transactions declined with error code 05, SYSTEM ERROR. Would not allow option of signing either. Very frustrating with car rental, hotels and restaurants. Never any trouble with any of the other bank' s machines although some did not accept PIN option but always allowed signing as alternative. We ended up simply boycotting any business using Commonwealth bank as much as possible. I use a 4 digit PIN. I called Commonwealth bank and they said something about the first 5 digits of my VISA card might be the problem. They better fix the problem fast as I am sure they will lose out on business. My advice is to any North Americans planning a trip around Australia to have a cheap no fee Mastercard/VISA as an alternati... more »

Parking Banned For Cyclists Along Beach Rd.

Cyclists have had a compelling victory over motorists.

Kingston council is bringing in No Parking on weekends, 6.00am - 10.00am Saturday and Sunday to clear the way for cyclists. The no-parking zones will apply on the inland side of Beach Rd. between Mundy St. Mentone, and Nepean Highway, Mordialloc, and on the coast side between Rennison St and the highway.

This should make the road safer for the 9,000 or so cyclists - they will no longer have to weave their way in and around parked cars!

Only 2 weeks in Australia, need help on itinerary!

Hi,

My girlfriend and I will be in Australia for 2 weeks starting tomorrow. 2 weeks is obviously way too short but we want to try and do a few things on the east coast.

Hoping to head north from Sydney and see some of the east coast and try to get as far as Fraser Island before heading back to Sydney. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Bus? Car? Drive up, fly back?

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Risky Sydney connection

Hi guys

Just looking for some advice - I'm looking at flying from Perth to Fiji, via Sydney. My flight on Virgin from Perth arrives 7.05am at the domestic terminal; my flight to Fiji on V Australia leaves the international terminal (or so I assume) at 8.10am. I don't think bags will be checked through as I'm booking them as two separate flights - or do you think Virgin in Perth might do that? With that scenario, is it too much of a risk? Other option is to leave Perth earlier, spending the night in Sydney, but I'm not super keen on doing that.

Thoughts?

Rats

Hi,
Since when did you guys start protecting the common norway rat!! ???

.ITV has been fined 3,000 Australian dollars (£1,672) after contestants on
its show, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, killed and ate a rat.

The fine, for animal cruelty, was issued by the RSPCA in Australia, where
the show was filmed last year. "The animal was killed for a TV show,
that's not appropriate," said RSPCA chief inspector David Oshannessy.

A spokesman for ITV said: "ITV has apologised for the mistake which led to
this incident."

He continued: "The production was unaware that killing a rat could be an
offence, criminal or otherwise in New South Wales, and accepts that further
inquiries should have been made.

Driving between QLD and NT - dust problem?

Soon I will be driving from Sydney up to Cairns, and into NT, through Alice Springs and Uluru down to SA from late Feb-Early April.

I was informed today though it is the wet season and I may have problems crossing QLD into NT, due to the dust (balldust?), which can turn to sludge this time of year.

Am I likely to come across this problem? I will probably give Darwin a miss so won't be heading that far north.

Thanks in advance for reply.

Best Treks in May

Hi There,

My partner and i organised a trip to NZ for 4 weeks in March, then, unfortunatly he fractured his ankle on the weekend and we have to postpone our trip. Now we are planning to move the 4 weeks to May (1st to the 28th) and hoping to keep the same rough itinerary we had before - 10 days North and 18 days south with our campervan. I must say im loving the people already, we had booked and paid for pretty much everything and all organisations have been great with us changing dates (apart from the airline) Anyways....

We wanted to do the Roteburn track for 4 days however due to the weather i assume this will be alot harder in the off-peak season so we might just skip it. However we do still want to do a trek (North or South Island) if anyone has any suggestions?
We wanted to avoid taking our cooker etc and stay in huts provided (although reading up on it most of them you ... more »
