I'm doing a bit of Europe in May/June. I've just seen some airfares from New Zealand which would need to be booked in the next week. I'm trying to work out the total distance along the EuroVelo routes between Athens and Berlin. If I know this I can work out how long it will take so I can book the return flights. Unfortunately I haven't got time to buy maps. The route would be from Athens along Route 8 through Tirana and Podgorica. Then Route 9 through Ljubljana and Vienna. Route 4 to Prague and 7 to Berlin.
If anyone has the maps and can tell me the total distance that would be greatly appreciated.
Does this look like a good route??
I am planning a tour along the Silk Road, from Turkey across Iran, Pakistan, India all the way to Beijing. I don't have a clear and fixed schedule, but I won't be setting off before March 2012, or even as late as October 2012. The plan is subject to change depending on the agreement between travelling partners.
Currently I am on a long tour starting late July 2011. I have been riding across Europe and am currently in Greece where I plan to spend the winter. 95% percent of the time I camp, using CS and WS occasionaly. I carry a portable Primus stove with me and I cook. Given the opportunity, I avoid busy roads and instead use secondary ones.
I ride leisurely, riding from 30 to 130 kilometres a day, as I do not like rushing and pushing.
I am 40 years old, a woman, a witer; I also write about this trip for a magazine, so I often stop to take photos and talk to people.

I have a question about bag security when stopped at road side stalls, at more formal stores, or in town in general. I will be biking with a friend so one of us could always stay behind with the bikes while the other shops for food but it would be nice to not take this precaution if it is not necessarily. Has anyone had problems with theft of their bike or of other stuff off their bikes while touring along the Western side of South America?
Does anyone know of good ways to secure bike bags and their contents? I assume the answer is to take your bags with you whenever you leave your bike and to lock up your bike when you are in any town (as opposed to camping along the road) but I am new to bike touring and an interested in how others have approached the issue of theft. I am also interested in the question of locking bikes up outside vs bringing them inside when one finds a place to... more »
I have never brought an electronic device with me when traveling. However, I will be touring for a year and am interested in knowing if folks have found electronic devices like the iPad, or other tablets valuable. I would like to post to a blog every once and a while (monthly or bi-weekly) I can see spending a few hours a week in the evenings writing a blog or e-mails and having them ready to upload when I arrive in a town or city center with an internet cafe. I would like to do this as opposed to spending hours and hours writing at internet cafe when I come into a town and miss visiting and exploring the town all together.
Which devices have others used, have you liked them? Has anyone found a solar panel that could be brought along to charge the battery? Any recommendations would be valuable.
My boyfriend and I are planning a 2-3 week trip next Winter (2012 on hopefully $4000-5000 total including airfare from Vancouver/Seattle to our destination. We have a few ideas but we want to make sure we go to the best place at the best time of year where we can enjoy and take in as much as possible in 2-3 weeks. We like hiking/biking/Tasty-tasty food/safety/420(totally not neccesary) and don't mind the party scene. A couple options we were thinking about where either Denmark/Amsterdam or Peru. Just wanted to know if anyone else did 2-3 week trips at this time of year and if they felt that they had the best weather and got to experience alot of culture and environments in such a short period. We've been to Tokyo, Cambodia and Bangkok and would love to go back but feel that 3 weeks is not enough time to enjoy those countries again, especially as the airfare is quite costly. I know thi... more »
A seven year-old Spaniard in my English immersion class tells me she has started dreaming in English. I've been learning Spanish for over 5 years and I've never had a dream in Spanish. Is she winding me up or am I just hopeless at Spanish?
Does anyone out there ever dream in a language which isn't their mother-tongue?
I posted an earlier question about Costa Rica in the 5th Trimester- most people responded very positively about the idea of going. There is one other concern I have, and that is whether or not to get a Hep A shot before going.
The health community doesn't seem to be able to say full on 100% that the vaccine is totally safe to get while pregnant, however it is recommended if the risk of contracting Hep A is there. They can't say it's completely safe because there aren't any studies done to fully confirm it, but they do not seem to discourage you from taking it (as they would other vaccines that are just a flat out NO to have during pregnancy).
So, my question is has anyone had the Hep A shot while pregnant, or do you think there is any real danger is getting one?
Thanks for you input.
Hi there - we have a 9 & 11 year old, and are thinking of going to Western Europe next December. I am hoping to get some advice on what the weather is like at that time, and what countries you would recommend. I am thinking maybe France, Spain or Italy? Are the usual tourist attractions open? Is it less expensive than spring/summer? Or would you just say to go another time and go somewhere hot instead (and then, where????)
My husband and I have been to England and the Netherlands, but not to other European countries. We don't really want a cold vacation, but don't mind if the weather is similar to home (we are in Vancouver, Canada - it is usually about 0-5 C and raining). My kids speak some French, but us adults are limited to English only :-(
Thanks in advance!
Hi we are heading from Villazon early Jan heading for Tupiza and Uyuni. The satellite images show big scars in the road, paths as if there are blockages and obstacles. I accept that these are dated images. Does anyone have upto date information on this route?
I'm hoping to pick the brains of some family travelers with more experience than us! We are a family of 5 (kids aged 8.6 and 4) and we want to stay in cheap hostels / hotels in Sumatra, Malaysia and Thailand over 10 weeks this summer. Will we be able to find places with rooms large enough for us all to be in one room? Or will we need to sleep in two rooms with one adult in each? We don't plan to book any accommodation in advance but I'm suddenly worried that we might not find it easy to find places to accommodate us all!
Would be grateful to hear the experience of others traveling with children and finding rooms on the fly!
Thanks and regards
I haven't used my phone for eight months, having left the country I used to live in. Now I want access to the SIM card, in order to get some numbers from it. However, I can't remember the PIN number and no longer have an account with the company I bought it and the phone from.
Is there any way a PIN number can be "cracked"? I really do need those numbers. (Just a thought. Hope this isn't a silly question.)
not sure where to post this but looking for advice
our family of four is looking to go to mountains north of Oaxaca for some hiking
our 4 roundtrip tickets would include Mexico City as our Mexico connection
I have an issue that could prevent me from going and would easily ( if a doctor signing off that you shouldn't go is enough reason ) be corroborated by my physician
the fact that I can't go and my family wouldn't choose to go - are they covered by the insurance or only the person signed off by doctor?
and yes I'll be looking in fine print in meantime
many thanks, john
Is there anyone out there who is interested in riding on an independent cycling trip from Lhasa - the Nepal border (and onto Khatmandu) and sharing van/permit/guide costs etc. in Tibet.
The plan would be to go around Oct/Nov 2012.
I know of one Croatian cyclist who is interested in riding that way around then but if we can find 4-5 people who are willing to ride together, share costs etc it should make the total cost of the trip much cheaper.
Hi Guys and Gals,
First time post but its going to be quite a long one so forgive me. Also, apologies for some of the ignorance I may display in regards to my perception of travelling and cost. I have roughly £10k to my name and any advice or suggestions would be most welcome.
I am 26yrs old and contemplating going around the world for an indefinite period of time on my own. With the possibility of meeting old friends along the way.
The places I would like to see span across all continents baring Europe, as I feel I can visit the places of interest later in life (and when I have more money).
Originally I would have liked to have began my journey in South Africa around late September and travelled around all southern countries. Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Madagascar all by land and sea. After some research I found this cannot be done... more »
