Medellin for the first time

I want to see the city, meet people and explore the surrounding nature. I speak low-intermediate Spanish. I'm looking to stay for 2 weeks.

  • What kind of budget am I looking at? I'm not looking for anything high-end (I don't want to share a room with strangers) Just a $ range is fine.
  • Do Interac cards work (Canadian) in their ATM machines so that I could withdraw straight from my bank account?

Any suggestions would be helpful

Medellin, coffee country or Arequipa - long term stay

I am planning to move to South America for 3-6 months to practice my Spanish (I’m fairly fluent, but always looking to improve) and teach English. Top choices right now are:

-Medellin, Colombia (seems like the best fit for location, but not as happy with the programs I have found there)
-Coffee region of Colombia (Manizales, Pereira, or Ibague)
-Arequipa, Peru

The main reasons for these picks is that they satisfy my main criteria of a pleasant climate (not too hot, cold, or rainy), are relatively safe, low cost of living, mountain setting, friendly people, and are not overrun with tourists (I hope?).

Main concerns:
1. Mosquitoes: I can handle a few now and then, but don’t want to be spraying myself down with DEET daily. Lots of mosquitoes is an immediate disqualifier!
2. Long term city appeal – I will hopefully be teaching full time, so I don’t need tons of touristy t... more »

Using China Mobile SIM card to call home

Hi,

I am in Guilin, China at the minute and recently bought a China Mobile SIM card. I have RMB100 call credit already loaded onto it. I cannot seem to be able to make international calls to call home to Ireland.

I heard something about having to register the phone, but when I call the helpline number, 10086, the recorded message is in chinese so I've no clue how to get through to the english speaking staff that are apparently available.

Has anybody got some advice on this, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Salta/Busservie from Salta to BA/La Plata

Good morning!
I'll be going to Salta November 2nd departing from Asuncion, Paraguay. I was wondering if anyone has some good suggestions what to do there, suggestions for hostels, etc. ;)
Second question: After my stay in Salta I want to travel to Buenos Aires/La Plata. So far I found some Busservices for about 480-800 pesos. Do you think it's better to book in the internet beforehand, or can I get a better price bookin there at the busstation!?

Thank you

Peter

Help me find the 8 day overstay post please

I am so blazing tired after my last round 26/36 & my coach wasn't pleased that one shot went off into space.
Can you locate the post asking for an 8 day extension? The rules just changed and there is a definite possibility. In fact they can now extend T visas 90 days.

Apparently, you aren't allowed to blaze away with a pistol like it was an AR-15..

Hiking in the Canaries in November

Hi all,
Planning to spend 6 nights in the Canaries in November, mostly hiking.
At present, my flight is into an out of Tenerife Norte.

Trying to decide between the following:

1. Spend the entire time in Tenerife, including a climb of Teide (already booked the refuge)
2. Spend the first 2-3 days in La Palma, then head to Tenerife to climb Teide
Any recommendations? Thanks.
Also, can someone please confirm that I don't need a permit to climb Teide if I'm staying at the refuge.
Thanks.

Brian

Reviews of Casa Particulars?

I find online many sites where there are listings of CPs but I can't ever find on that site who decided which CPs to include and who wrote the description of each. Sounds great when they say "friendly hosts in clean room with A/C and private bath". But, at most, there will only be a couple of long range (not close up) pictures of the place. Is there anyplace to find real recommendations, other than TripAdvisor or the occasionally mentioned specific one in this forum?

Hong Kong - hostel recommendations?

Hi everyone!

I'll be staying in Hong Kong for two weeks in December 2012 and I am looking for a budget but not crappy place to stay. Any hostel or guesthouse place around 30USD / 25 EUR a night would do. I've already been in Hong Kong some years ago and stayed in a hostel in Chung King Manison and this was not that nice. Who has any recommendations of where to stay?

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

Airline carriers and fees for non-Peruvians

What's the low down on fees for foreigners traveling from Lima to Cusco? I saw acceptable airfares on Orbitz, but they included using LAN or TACA, which from what I've read, will charge approximately $175 each way since I'll be a non-Peruvian.

I might just book separate flights, fly into Lima, then use Peru Star or Peruvian Airlines. The downside to this is, I might end up staying in Lima, which I hadn't planned on. I'm weary of booking independent flights on my own that require a connection.

Any comments on foreigners flying in Peru would be appreciated.

Female Traveller heading out to SE Asia for months. Suggestions!

Hi All,

I'm based out Toronto, Ontario and heading to Asia on a 6month travel binge...couldn't be more excited! I have a vague bucketlist of places I'd like to see and my ticket is booked to Depart January 2013-June 2013. I was fortunate enough to snag a 3 day stopover in Tokyo on my way, before landing in Bangkok which will be my base for the duration of the months as I have some family there. I have been to Thailand once before about a year ago. We visited Bangkok (Chatuchuk was too good!), Koh Tao, Koh Phangnan. This time I plan to explore more of the country and would love suggestions for hostels, things to do, sights to see- keeping in mind I am a female traveling solo. After settling into Bangkok I plan on flying to India and spending a month there with other friends and family, as well as visiting Rajastan, Agra-the Taj, Goa... then back to Thailand. I'm hoping to volunteer, ... more »

Avoid Camel Travel at any cost!!

We took a night bus from Ninh Binh to Hoi An (which departed from Hanoi). The following happened:

  • it was not possible to book seat numbers, which I found odd. When we got on, the driver gave us the worst possible seats at the back, so I ended up being in a 3-person 'bed' in the middle of course next to a stranger (all of us non-Vietnamese)... nice... impossible to negotiate as the guy does not speak English (or does not want to)
  • the bed was next to the loo, which was soon overfilled and smelly from 3am... Nobody seemed to care and they kept using it... we had a lovely night as you can imagine
  • despite the loo not being usable, the driver did not want to stop. We did not stop once. At long last we stopped in Hue, the girl I was travelling with ran to the toilets. A couple of minutes later the driver wanted to leave, I told him to wait until she comes back. He started scr...
