How to get to Labuan Bajo and Komodo park from Lambok without flying?

My girlfriend and I are heading to Indonesia in the next couple of months and were hoping to get to Komodo or Rinca island from Labuan Bajo. Since we're trying to save some money, we're trying to avoid flying from Lambok to Labuan Bajo, and possibly hoping to skip one of the tours to Komodo/Rinca and instead chartering a boat to there.

Does anyone have any idea how long it takes to get to LB over land and boat and how much it would cost? Is it even worth the hassle if the cost isn't that different between flying or surface travel? Been trying to do some research on this and have been getting a bunch of nothing or conflicting answers. Same goes for tour vs. charter in LB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Venice Gondola Ride

I'm looking for some advice on taking a gondola ride in Venice. I've heard that some of the smaller back canals are much cheaper than the main tourist ones.
Any recommendations would be greatly received.
Plus recommendations for restaurants/cafes - all budgets.
Thank you :-)

South Korea and Japan in 24 days

Hi, I have 25 days off work in April and have decided to pick up my bags and go somewhere different.

I currently have 3 options in mind:

Option 1: South Korea and Japan
Option 2: India and Nepal
Option 3: Central America

Could anyone in this forum give me a few thoughts as to whether this is feasible and if so a recommended itinerary. I like most things; nature, cities, beaches etc etc. and want to combine a bit of everything into my trip. I'm a 32 lone female and will be backpacking, although happy to spend a few extra pounds so i'm starying in somewhere fairly decent...my standards have tended to go up over the years...having said that i've just left the army, so happy to rough it if/when necessary.

Any thoughts on places to go and see would be appreciated. Also top tips from getting to Japan via ferry as that is the current plan.

Thanks to all that are able to r... more »

Tokyo (1 week) – West Japan (2 weeks): which JR Pass?

Next year we’re going for 3 weeks to Japan.
The first week we’re staying in Tokyo and we want to discover Tokyo and we want to make day trips (to Nikko?, Kamakura?)
The last two weeks we want to go to West Japan: Kyoto, Nara, Koyasan(?), Okokyama(?), Hiroshima, Miyajima, ....(?)....
The last two weeks we don’t want to travel every day, but we want also make day trips (from Kyoto e.g.)

Do we need a JR Pass? What kind of JR Pass do we need?
For example a JR West Rail Pass and a Suica&PASMO card?
Or just buy individual tickets?

Help me choose?

Going to Vietnam. Only have 29 days. Tried to plan private tour but way too expensive so have to do it on my own on public transport so have to cut down what I see and make choices. Unfortunately, I'm on short timescales because the private tour took so long to come back to me. I'm going to Vietnam at end of February.
Looking for advice.
If you had to choose between Sapa or Ha Giang/Dong Van/Meo Vac for scenery and a little trekking, which would you choose?
If you had to choose between Halong Bay or Cat Ba Island/Lan Ha Bay, which would you choose?
Any help appreciated.

My Morrocan holiday.............

A BIG THANK U to everyone for info I’ve gathered from this forum. Armed with that, the LP Morocco my partner & myself set off on a 24 day trip of Marocco. Unfortunately we couldn’t get onto the roads less travelled as we wanted to see as much as possible in the time available. It was our first trip to Morocco & we made the following decisions (probably not everyone’s taste but it was what we did) (D = Dirham) -- I hope it can be of use to some!!!

RABAT
Hotel Dhormi – paid D200 for a double room. The owner was very friendly and helpful. It is a very nice hotel for the price. We had amazing street food in the Medina for D10! A meat sandwich which is like a burger but much tastier! We walked to Chella from the Medina – no need to take a taxi there. At the Mausoleum don’t take any photographs of the guards from behind. I couldn’t find out why they dislike it but they were... more »

Trek to EBC in March 2013

Hi,

I am a 30yr old female setting off on my first trekking experience to Everest Base Camp in March. I was wandering if anyone has a packing list for this time of year?. I would also like peoples views on sleeping bags. I currently have a +5 synthetic bag and I can only assume this is not going to be any good, especially the higher up I go. I did have a sleeping bag liner that I thought may add a little warmth, but perhaps not quite warm enough. I tend to feel the cold, so I'd be keen to know what peoples thoughts are on the bag I would need. Also what trekking pants should I get?. I.e. material - cotton/nylon etc and Is it necessary to take rain pants? and finally, I am tossing up what camera to take. I have a compact camera and an SLR. But Im thinking maybe the SLR would be a bit too big and take up too much space. Thanks heaps for any info you may have.

Cheers more »

What to do south of Sydney

Hey,
I'm travelling with my boyfriend down the easy coast of australia and we are stuck for ideas of places to visit south of Sydney,
We have 6weeks to spend here before we fly out to Thailand and to be honest all the advice we've been getting is focused at heading north where all the tourist things are (but we've done that) we ideally wanted to end our trip in Melbourne as this is where we fly out of however we don't want to spend the next 6weeks there.
We're travelling by train not car but that doesn't really phase us as to where to go but obviously scenic car trips are not possible.
Any advice would be fabulous :)
Thanks in advance.

Nakhon Si Thammarat Province incl Khanom: Your Suggestions?

Hello. Now i will look around Nakhon Si Thammarat province by rental street car (not 4WD) for around a week. What are your suggestions? I do have both Lonely Planet Thailand and Rough Guide Thailand (the latter is better for this area). At the Nakhon Si Thammarat tourist office I already got some helpful brochures about many destinations around the area. I do speak a bit of tourist Thai - enough to deal with receptionists, khanom jin operators and curios locals. I have seen NST town already.

I certainly would like to see

  • Khao Luang
  • Khanom beaches + resorts

I would also like to hear your opinions on atmospheric villages and towns, nature experience, lonely-farang-avoidance and anything else that you found remarkable.

Of the many resorts around Khanom, maybe you could recommend a place that's good in these departments:
  • rather natural, not tons of concrete
  • good shad...

itinerary help!!

Hello! I have a few questions about routes. I am traveling through southeast Asia, currently in southern Thailand attempting to route out the next leg of my journey. I am planning on spending approximately now until early March to travel between Vietnam Laos and undecided about Cambodia. The Thailand to Cambodia terror stories and making me less interested in Angkor watt daily. I'll be headed to Bangkok in a couple weeks and thinking of going to southern Laos, possibly near Si phan don, then headed north for trekking and floating. I would eventually make my way to Hanoi, and ha long bay. Can anyone offer route suggestions, that would be both efficient and economical? I need to be back in bangkok at the end of my journey. I will however return to northern Thailand after a short trip to India, and Nepal before heading to the states.

I am traveling with a female friend, and on a t... more »

East Coast Australia and NZ North Island

Hi,

I am planning on going travelling starting in Sydney beginning of June 2013. I will than have a month in Australia before flying from Brisbane to Auckland and having 2 weeks in NZ.

After a few days in Sydney my plan was to drive the East Coast with a campervan up to Cairnes before flying back to Brisbane. I have heard mixed reviews about this-some say the drive is quite boring whilst others say its great! Do you have any reccomendations on what I should do? What are the main sights that I should visit?

I have no idea so far regarding what to do in NZ but am planning to stay in the North Island and would like to do some skiing and maybe a skydive? Does anyone have any advice? I wasn't planning on hiring a campervan again and so was planning on depending on public transport- is this a reasonable thing to do?

I would appreciate any help!

thanks! more »
