La Falote
Wee, checked-tablecloth La Falote is about Dutch home-style cooking, such as calf’s liver, meatballs with endives or stewed fish with beets and mustard sauce.

Haesje Claes
Haesje Claes’ warm surrounds, a tad touristy but with lots of dark wood and antique knick-knacks, are just the place to sample comforting pea soup and endive stamppot. The fish starter has a great sampling of Dutch fishes.

Moeders
Mum’s the word at ‘Mothers’, a delightful hodgepodge of decor and food, including stamppot (potatoes mashed with kale, endive or sauerkraut), seafood, Moroccan dishes and an assortment of other lip-smacking traditional Dutch dishes.

Loetje
This cafe’s short menu may be written on the chalkboard, but everyone just orders thick steak, served medium-rare and swimming in delicious brown gravy. The staff are surprisingly good humoured, particularly considering the loud, meat-drunken mobs they typically serve.

Hap Hmm
Elsewhere €7 might buy you a bowl of soup, but at this wood-panelled neighbourhood place it might buy an entire dinner: simple Dutch cooking (meat + vegies + potatoes), served on stainless-steel dishes.

De Keuken Van 1870
You’d never guess that this smart-looking place was once a restaurant for the poor. It still keeps up that heritage, though, with decent cooking (think stamppot or couscous) at exceedingly decent prices. The service can be a bit surly – just consider it part of the cultural experience.
