Book well ahead for weekends and in summer. It’s worth paying a bit extra for something central so you can enjoy the nightlife without resorting to night buses or taxis. Many lodgings in the capital city, Amsterdam, cater specifically to party animals, with flowing booze, pot smoking and general mayhem around the clock. Others parts of the country exude old-world charm. Any hotel with more than 20 rooms is considered large, and many rooms are on the snug side. Note that wi-fi is nearly universal, but air-conditioning and lifts are not. Prepare to carry your luggage up steep stair- cases, or else request a lower-floor room.
