Places in Friesland (Fryslân)
The N357, which connects Leeuwarden with the Ameland ferry port at Holwerd, 23km to the north, passes some of the oldest settled parts of Friesland – it's an excellent route for touring. On bicycles, national bike route LF3 covers the route in 28km. At Ferwerd, 6km southwest of Holwerd, watch for a road northeast to Hogebeintum, 3km off the N357.
'All Frisians know how to sail, and all Frisians know how to fish', so the saying goes. This is certainly true of the residents of Sneek, but then again, they have no choice in the matter: Frisian lakes and rivers are linked to the IJsselmeer and decorate the land not unlike the spots on the local dairy cows. If you've got a hankering to get out under sail, this is the place.
