Various national parks have been created amid the farmlands and natural areas of Drenthe. Drentsche Aa National Landscape takes in a varied 10,000 hectare landscape of ancient farms, fields of wildflowers, hunebedden and evocative country roads. It's mostly undeveloped but the park map, available from tourist offices, is a good guide.
Of the 107,000 Jews living in the Netherlands before WWII, all but 5,000 were deported by the Nazis. Almost all died in the concentration and death camps of Central and Eastern Europe and almost all began their fateful journey here, a rural forest about 10km south of Assen, near the village of Hooghalen.
