Hollandsche Manege
Just outside the Vondelpark is the neoclassical Hollandsche Manege, an indoor riding school inspired by the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Designed by AL van Gendt and built in 1882, the building was fully restored in the 1980s. There's aslo a cafe where you can sip a beer or coffee and, from the balcony, watch the instructor put the horses through their paces.

Museumplein
This vast, open park behind the Rijksmuseum was cleverly redeveloped in 1999-2000 and today is one of Amsterdam's busiest open spaces. Beneath the park is a car park and supermarket, while back at street level there is a café, skate ramp and a large, sparkling pond (perfect for ice-skating in winter).

Oosterpark
This sprawling park was laid out in the 1880s to accommodate the nouveaux rich of the city's diamond traders who benefited from the South African diamond boom. The park makes a fine diversion if you're heading to the nearby Tropenmuseum. Between the museum and the large pond stands the Spreeksteen, a little Hyde Park Corner where orators of every ilk can have their say; see www.spreeksteen.nl for the erratic schedule.
