Lonely Planet review

Impressive in scale and scope, the museum is housed in a beautifully restored complex of four Ashkenazic synagogues from the 17th and 18th centuries. The enormous Great Synagogue is home to two exhibitions - the history of the Jews in the Netherlands, 1600-1890; and Religion, about Judaism and Jewish traditions.

Exhibits start with the pillars of Jewish identity and gradually give way to an engaging portrait of Jewish life in the city, with profiles of key figures and displays of religious items. The English-language audio tour is excellent (no extra charge). The museum also contains a bright new café serving kosher dishes.
