Divan
In a town where ‘Turkish’ usually means ‘takeaway’ (or ‘pizza’), Divan offers a calming alternative. The meze combo starter provides 10 assorted dips, skewers and salads, and we loved ali nazik (minced lamb with aubergines in yoghurt garlic sauce), but it was the gracious, sweet service that will take us back.

Bazar
Our 4-year-old critic dubbed this hip Mid East cafe ‘the most beautiful restaurant in the world’. With plenty of room and tolerant staff, the place is great for younger ones, and parents will like the variety of the food. The Turkish-style breakfast (€8) is particularly nice. Look for the golden angel atop the building.

Gaziantep/Harison’s
The window says Bosnian, but this corner bakery’s stock is purely Turkish, with excellent lahmacun (what the Dutch call ‘Turkish pizza’), as well as breakfast cookies, savoury pies and big, chewy loaves of bread. Wash it down with some ayran (salty yogurt drink).

Orontes
The chef imports many of his ingredients (pomegranate sauce, olives and chickpeas) from his Turkish homeland, and real-deal, authentic flavours are the result. Charcoal-grilled meat and fish dishes occupy most plates, and there’s eggplant aplenty for vegetarians.

Turkiye
English may not work at this simple shop, but it doesn't matter: the dishes inside the glass case are plenty eloquent. Locals value Turkiye for its grilled mains and small plates like stuffed tomatoes and Turkish pizza. Eat-in or takeaway.

Mercan
This Turkish bakery is an excellent pit stop for a turkse pizza - aka lahmacun, a crispy flatbread topped with spiced ground meat, creamy yoghurt and hot sauce and rolled up for easy eating.

Kismet
Primarily a takeout joint, Kismet also has a couple of tables wedged in the back. Either way, it provides good, fresh-tasting Turkish staples such as stuffed eggplant, baked lamb and assorted salads.
