De Tokoman
We have it on good authority that this is the city’s best broodje pom, a sandwich filled with a tasty mash of chicken and a starchy Surinamese tuber. You’ll want the zuur (pickled-cabbage relish) and peper (chilli) on it, plus a cold can of coconut water to wash it down.

Kam Yin
It’s nothing much to look at, but this plastic and fluorescent operation nonetheless dispenses excellent versions of Surinamese standards like roti and tjauw min (thick noodles with assorted meats). Its broodje pom (a chicken-casserole sandwich) ranks as one of the city’s best.

Albert Cuyp 67
If you’re looking for stylish surrounds, turn away now. If, however, you’re after quality examples of Surinamese food, take a seat. A colossal portion of roti kip (chicken curry, flaky roti bread, potatoes, cabbage and egg) is a fine replenishment.

Roopram Roti
There’s often a line out the door at this bare-bones Surinamese place, but don’t worry, it moves fast. Place your order – lamb roti ‘extra’ (with egg) and a barra (lentil doughnut) at least – with the man at the bar, and don’t forget the fiery hot sauce.
