Lonely Planet review for Bazar Amsterdam

In a glorious former Dutch Reformed Church, the light-filled, Middle Eastern-style decor matches the Middle Eastern-style food. Fish and chicken dishes please meat eaters; aubergine and portobello mushroom dishes gratify vegetarians. Breakfast and lunch are served all day.

    So so...

    msgroosjohan recommends this,

The ambiance is great: the restaurant is located in an old church in the middle of the biggest market of the country (Albert Cuyp). Inside it's also beautifuly decorated in northern African style. However, the food is not all that good: mostly northern African dishes, but nothing very tasty! Also not surprising or new... All in all, a good place for the ambience, but don't expect great food!

    MIDDLE EAST IN THE SPOTLIGHT

    kimwillrule recommends this,

The first sights that arrest your attention in this Middle-East made ultra-cool restaurant, are the gargantuan and colourful Moroccan lamps that hang majestically from the soaring ceiling. You’re not in Casablanca. You’re in one of the best-kept secrets in the heart of Amsterdam.

Below, a din rises to the top. This popular restaurant brims with loquacious locals everyday. Finding a seat is difficult but rewarding. Seat yourself at the bar while waiting and feast your eyes on the splendour of the lamps and the curious Chinese and Middle Eastern objects gracing the high walls.

Continue the feasting when you finally get a table. There’s absolutely no need for appetisers as the main dishes are mammoth and easy on your wallet. But if you really must, Ifhan’s and Abdhul’s starters will give you a real taste of the Middle East and the fresh produce Bazar gets from the surrounding Albert Cuyp market. Like the lamps, mains are eye candy. Even better, they are mouth-watering and filling. Save some space in that belly for a pleasurable denouement: Oase dessert, served on a sprawling platter that will have you gaping for minutes.

The final surprise: the bill that amounts to peanuts for the superb food, service and ambience.
