Scoring high on elegance but low on pomposity, the Pulitzer manages to combine big-hotel efficiency with boutique-hotel charm. Spread among 25 historic canal houses, the individually decorated, beautifully restored rooms all have mod touches galore, including sweet and cosy bathrooms. There are loads of extras, too (from the cigar bar and art gallery to a sleek gym and private canal cruises) along with lush garden courtyards and a wonderful restaurant and bar. Wi-fi is €19 for 24 hours.
