Lonely Planet review

It's easy to clear your mind in rooms named after philosophers. Each room has its own theme representing its namesake, from Thoreau (with a mural of Walden Pond) to Nietzsche (lots of red, representing his book Morgenröte, meaning 'The Dawn'). There's an elegant bar, and the tranquil English garden is a pastoral pleasure come summer.

The hotel features in the novel The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, though it wasn't used as a filming location in the hugely popular 2014 film adaptation (in the movie, the American Hotel on Leidseplein is used as its stand-in).

Our independent authors have visited Hotel de Filosoof and selected this as one of our recommended boutique hotels in Vondelpark & Around.
