This Art Nouveau delight is in top form, with a crisp white and caramel colour scheme and sleek, contemporary designer furniture. Other pleasures include a solarium, steam bath and whirlpool, garden-view bar and attentive staff.

With 62 rooms, the Jan Luyken is a mid- to large-size hotel for the city, yet because of its setting in three late-19th-century mansions the feel is more intimate-chic than grand-opulent. Public spaces on the ground floor like the gem box of a lobby bar and lounge illustrate this. The construction of the three original buildings are evident once you head upstairs. The rooms vary in shape and size; some rooms have bathtub, and others showers with generous showerheads. 'Superior' rooms can be quite large and come with a menu of cute books for you to read, pillows and CDs. The Jan Luyken gets its share of business travellers, but non-business visitors are welcome too. The buffet breakfast includes champagne to start your day right.
