Introducing Upper Gambia River
The Upper Gambia river rolls along east, from the river crossing near Mansa Konko to the Senegal border. Sleepy towns like Georgetown and further east, Basse Santa Su, are great spots to stop awhile and take it easy, or base yourself while exploring the hinterland. Don't miss a pirogue trip around the River Gambia National Park, which is spread out over five islands in the middle of the river. You can't land on the islands but you might see some chimpanzees scratching themselves as you float past. Fans of large mysterious stones won't want to be denied a chance to visit the Wassu Stone Circles, just northwest of Georgetown. They are hundreds of such stone circles, spread out over The Gambia and Senegal, and the reason they were built over 1000 years ago remains largely unexplained.Advertisement
