Why is the bread green?
Blog: I don't wash my hair - 27 November 2009
As it happened, I ended up in Thailand for Loi Krathong, one of the most important Thai festivals (don't ask me anything about it, all I know is that it's important). It's celebrated in different ways in different cities. In Chiang Mai, hundreds of lanterns are released into the sky, where many catch in branches and set fire to trees, but those that do not look very pretty ascending towards the stars. In Bangkok, small baskets of flowers, candles and incense are lit and set adrift in rivers and lakes.

Blog: I don't wash my hair - 25 November 2009
In the aftermath of the visa debacle, something unexpected happened: I remembered that I am equal parts anxious, vulnerable, fragile soul and intrepid, infinitely curious adventuress. I remembered that the world is no less my oyster simply because I cannot control its every minute pocket of insanity. (Or in the case of the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, its big, official-looking, concrete, intimidating shithole of insanity where things are run like a choose-your-own-adventure book, only it's not you choosing, of course, it's whatever nut they've hired behind the window.

Imagine City of Women, only without such a clear plot line
Blog: I don't wash my hair - 22 November 2009
UPDATE: My last post was plagued with uncertainty. Today the verdict is in: I am staying in Jambi! I will now continue to post stories of the last month, which may seem irrelevant at first, but it was a long, twisting road to where I ended up last week and I intend to work through it all piece by piece. So for now, we return to Thailand...

Thailand's Internet Problems Bigger than Vietnam's Facebook
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 20 November 2009
As frustrating as Vietnam’s apparent government-initiated black-out of Facebook has been this month, we can be thankful that Vietnam is not Thailand. It might surprise people to know that Thailand is one of the most repressive countries in Southeast Asia when it comes to internet access.

Phi Phi Island
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Phi Phi island was bloody lovely! This was the first place I actually felt like I was in the Thailand you see in the magazines and on TV, it was beautiful. I had 4 great days there even though I was still recovering from my little illness it was great to finally kick back on a proper chilled out island.Getting to Phi Phi was fairly funny and defiantly worth a mention. Feeling still not 100% I [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!

Koh Tao
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Had an amazing time in Koh Tao as we decided to take a Scuba diving course which was just quality. While for me this was possibly the most enjoyable and rewarding things I have done while I am traveling it also absolutely rattled my budget. Scuba diving was not something that was originally on my list of things to do while traveling but after the fun I had in Phi Phi snorkeling I was now well up [[ This is a content summary only. Phuket/Patong
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
After 5 days in Bangkok we finally managed to book a bus out of there to Phuket. One of the most visited (and accessible) islands at the very south of Thailand. We booked a V.I.P bus from Bangkok station all the way down to Phuket Town which all in all took about 18 hours. I have done a lot of massive bus journeys in my time what with all the ski trips I used to do normally over 24 hours but this [[ This is a content summary only. Bangkok Pt.1
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Right well before I go on I did not take a single picture in Bangkok. This is for 3 reasons;1. I'm too hot and sweating to much to be arsed to carry the bastard around.2. On the first day there I thought everyone was out to mug me.3. There was nothing worth taking a photo of.So far my post about Bangkok has been the hardest one to write out of all the ones I've done so far and this is my fourth [[ This is a content summary only. Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
I had Been wanting to go see some Thai boxing the whole time I have been in Thailand and finally got the opportunity the second time round during our visit to Koh Samui. Like the absolute players we are we went for ring side seats so we could get the closest view of the action for only 1000 Baht (20 quid). Now I am not a massive boxing fan and have never seen conventional boxing live, let alone [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!

Bangkok Pt.4
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Who'd believe it Back again! I wasn't really sure what my plan was when I came back to Bangkok and I wasn't sure how long I was going to be there for or really what I would do. I headed back to Bangkok on the 12th of May and I was debating whether or not to stay here in Bangkok for my birthday as I wanted to be in a place I knew so I could work out what I wanted to do rather than go somewhere new [[ This is a content summary only. Bangkok Pt.3
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Bangkok Pt.3 was a 2 night stop over in Bangkok which was more of a necessity rather than something we wanted to do. To get out of Cambodia we could either bus straight to Koh Samui from Siem Reap which would have been very expensive and taken nearly 30 hours or go via Bangkok stay there for a night then head down to the Thai islands as we made our way to the full moon party. The original plan was [[ This is a content summary only. Koh Pha Ngan
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
Koh Pha Ngan was a pretty crazy mix of things really. By day (when I wasn't sleeping) it was the ultimate chill out island where I would either be relaxing on the beach or by the pool. Then at night I would be raving it up on the beach for either the full moon warm up parties or the actual full moon itself. I was on the verge of being nocturnal here which is a bit of shame due to the beautiful [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!

The Full Moon Party
Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 November 2009
The Full Moon Party was the reason I came back to Thailand again. Well I say the reason, I came back for loads of reasons mainly because I love this place but this was, I guess, the main excuse for coming back. It was unreal and 100% worth cutting our time down in Vietnam and Cambodia for. It was 3 nights worth of build up climaxing on this one night. Before the actual Full Moon Party there were [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more!

I’ve been back home for over a week now. After two months in Europe, I’ve come back to my friends, good drinks, Cheap Charlies, amazing food, great weather, and chaotic excitement. Yes, I’ve come back to Bangkok. Though born and raised in Boston, I consider Bangkok home now. When people ask me “where I live?” [...]

Mr. Daniel? The doctor will pose for cruelly inappropriate pictures now
Blog: I don't wash my hair - 15 November 2009
During my trip to Chiang Mai, I accompanied Elephant Program Director Daniel, who fell off a cliff and broke himself, to a handful of hospital visits, including one (my favorite, for sure!) where I got to see his cast removed and replaced. Most people have probably broken things but I never have (except for some really minor pinky finger fracture acquired while playing with my father, an injury the worst consequence of which was my dad's refusal to rough house with me ever again).

Cambodia and Thailand Closing Borders?
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 9 November 2009
Uhg. Thailand and Cambodia have had a variety of hot disputes over territory in the last decade, mostly around the issue of Preah Vihear and perceptions over Angkor Wat. Thailand of course has had its own internal turmoil, brought to a head in the 2006 coup and continuing protests since.

Thailand and SE Asia Not Quite the Bargain it Used to Be
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 7 November 2009
I'm in Thailand now working on the AA Keyguide to Thailand, having just left Cambodia, where I finished up the Thomas Cook Travelers' Guide to Cambodia. Now that I'm on the road again, I've had to make use of credit cards on a regular basis to get cash. It has been a bit of a shock to see what fees are up to now. I was charged $50 on a single ATM cash advance--at that is just the bank fees back in the USA. So far, my overall credit card fees have averaged 7%.
