Night train from Bangkok
Blog: photito's blog - 9 November 2011
Bangkok to Laos – overnight train ride or one hour flight? What is it about tedious train rides? I suppose I can only speak for myself when I say that they form seriously fond travel memories. This time we decided to take the kids on board to see if they share our sense of ‘old [...]

We came to Chiang Mai planning to rent an apartment for three months and focus on getting lots of work done. The huge amount of travel bloggers and digital nomads that have made the city their temporary base is testament to its attractions.

A room at the (primitive) Palace
Blog: The Adventures of D - 7 November 2011
I don’t expect much when Jack hands me the key to my room, a hut in the Palace complex. On the Elephant Nature Park’s Web site, it states the toilets are squat and the showers are Thai (meaning buckets to rinse, no shower heads), so when I walk the few feet to my lodging for [...]

Floating elephant poo and other awesomeness
Blog: The Adventures of D - 4 November 2011
“Ele poo! Look out, ele poo!” Jack screams as we wade into the rushing water, elephants at our side. Sure enough, there are huge balls of elephant poo floating by our legs. It’s like the elephants just hold it until they hit their own, big rushing river toilet. Before we get into the water, we [...]

Photo Essay: Yee Peng Floating Lantern Festival, Chiang Mai
Blog: Never Ending Voyage - 1 November 2011
The Chiang Mai regulars rave about the Yee Peng (or Yi Peng) floating lantern festival that takes place each year, and after attending the event last weekend we are now amongst the converts. It was one of the most incredible, beautiful sights we have ever seen.

A Little Insight…Thailand’s Crazy Quirks and Fun Facts
Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 1 November 2011
In the early days of A Little Adrift I used to have a page on the site completely dedicated to the fun facts and tidbits I discovered in each new country. I called the page “Strangeness” (why I ever thought that was a good idea, I’ll never know) and it had some of the raw, unfiltered and seemingly meaningless quirky facts that rarely make it into my travel stories. I was new to travel and everything around me was a surprise so I filled the Australia page with things like: Note ...

The Thailand Foodgasm: The ultimate Thai buffet
Blog: The Adventures of D - 30 October 2011
The lunch bell rings at Elephant Nature Park at noon. Had we really already been there a few hours? The time so far has flown by. And, while I love that the experiences were that supremely amazing thus far, I don’t want the week to fly by. I want to savor every single moment and feel [...]

Photo of the Week: Yee Peng Floating Lantern Ceremony
Blog: Never Ending Voyage - 30 October 2011
Yesterday we participated in one of the most incredible events we have ever seen. The Yee Peng Floating Lantern Ceremony in Chiang Mai, Thailand is an ancient, traditional festival that pays respect to the Lord Buddha. After Buddhist chanting and meditation thousands of paper lanterns are lit and released into the sky.

A Fifth Generation Portrait from Thailand

Taking portraits is one of my favourite forms of photography. When we were traveling through Northern Thailand with The Smiling Albino, we had a gorgeous day walking along the tea terraces. Yes, there are tea terraces in Thailand.

October Update: Thailand
Blog: Never Ending Voyage - 27 October 2011
Travel Bangkok was a shock after orderly, efficient Japan and we couldn’t warm to the huge, crowded city with its constant traffic. We’d seen the sites on a previous trip so this time we focused on eating – from western comforts in the many shopping centres to taking advantage of the wealth of meat-free street [...]

10 Mouthwatering National Dishes from Southeast Asia
Blog: GoBackpacking - 24 October 2011
1. Indonesia - Nasi Padang Due to the vast spread out archipelago of Indoneisa, it’s almost impossible to label a real national dish for the entire country. I’ve just gone ahead and mentioned a normal everyday meal of Nasi Padang that consists of a plate of rice topped with a choice of dishes. When I was [...]

Feeding elephants
Blog: The Adventures of D - 23 October 2011
Within an hour of arriving to the park, I have met my first elephants. Our van is the first to arrive at Elephant Nature Park, so we drop our bags, and sit down. But, it is hard for any of us to sit still. There are elephants. Everywhere. Not just the actual animals, either. There [...]

Photo of the Week: Thai Som Tam
Blog: Never Ending Voyage - 23 October 2011
Everyone raves about the food in Thailand but to be honest I’ve never been a fan. The dishes I’ve tried abroad and on our brief trip to Bangkok three years ago just didn’t inspire me. Since we’ve been in Thailand this time though, eating has been such a pleasure. We have had some average meals [...]

Why I Skipped the Full Moon Party of Koh Phangan
Blog: Living the Dream: RTW - 16 October 2011
The full moon party of Koh Phangan in Thailand is one of the biggest beach parties in the world. As the celebration only occurs once per month, I never thought that my travel schedule would line up in order to make it. As luck would have it, I arrived on the island of Koh Samui just days before the party was about to take place and was all set to head to Koh Phangan to attend. But in a stroke of randomness at the last second I changed my mind.

Tuk tuks, red cabs … and elephants: arriving to Elephant Nature Park
Blog: The Adventures of D - 15 October 2011
The drive from Chiang Mai to the Elephant Nature Park is nothing short of surreal: from urban to highway to jungle in about an hour. And from cars and tuk tuks to elephants and ox on the side of the road. We start our first day as volunteers, 23 of us ranging in age from [...]

Sunday Night Market madness
Blog: The Adventures of D - 14 October 2011
The Sunday Night Market, in theory, sounds awesome. Cheap shopping. Cheap eats. Stall after stall of items you don’t need, but suddenly have to have. My kinda market. I should have known better. Crowds and D never mix. And yet, there I was, being the cheerleader for Katie, Isabelle and I heading out into the [...]

Hangovers and headaches
Blog: The Adventures of D - 12 October 2011
I woke up in the morning, curled up in a ball on my bed. I looked to my right, Katie and Isabelle were just waking up, too. My head. I sought to put together the pieces from the previous night. Whiskey and Coke bucket. Chang Beer. Which, apparently, is super strong. Dancing at the reggae bar. A [...]
