  2. Crocodile shows

Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 28 June 2009

Today we went to a crocodile show at the Melbourne Zoo called Crocodilia. Almost five months ago to the day, we went to a crocodile show at the Phuket Zoo in Thailand. Can you spot the differences? I know, I know, it’s easy to see: at the Melbourne Zoo, the keeper is handling a juvenile American [...]

  3. Day 3 - Giant Cave Spiders and a Flat Tire

    Blog: Hello, Pineapple? - 20 June 2009

On the south-west Thai island of Koh Lanta, in a stroke of perfect timing, we were able to meet up with some friends from back home who were on a one week vacation from their own year away, teaching in Taiwan. Koh Lanta is one of Thailand's more popular islands, but as was the case with most of our trip, it was relatively quiet, so we were able to experience some really fun activities without any crowds. Taking a break from lying on the long beach (backpacking sure is rough), we thought it would be nice to rent a couple of motorbikes and explore the island for the day.

  4. Ko Phi Phi

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 2 June 2009

This is my third time on the island and as I was there I was reminded how much I dislike it. I hate Ko Phi Phi. It’s one of the most overrated islands in all of Thailand. I spent the last four days there with some friends of mine from Bangkok. Originally, we were going [...]

  5. Chiang Mai

Blog: Where is Rob? - 28 May 2009

Chiang Mai was mint, could have spent a long time here as the place had a lot to offer but it would also have cost me an arm and a leg as the excursions weren't cheap. This was to be my very final stop in my now 2 month trip around Thailand and while I didn't really think about it too much at the time I was pretty sad that this was the last time I was going to be in Thailand properly. There is

  6. Phuket

Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 26 May 2009

Last stop on our Asian adventure of 2008-09 was Phuket, Thailand’s most populous island and amongst its most popular with foreign tourists. I didn’t really warm to Phuket, and in a bizarre way I was grateful for that: it made it easier in the end to go home. That said, it wasn’t all bad. We stayed [...]

  8. Thai Cooking Course

Blog: Where is Rob? - 25 May 2009

I bloody love Thai food so I had wanted to do a cooking course for quite a while in Thailand but had never found the time to do one. It was only Tommy and myself doing the cooking course as Pete had already done one in Bangkok and also was a strict Vegan so obviously didn't really want to be cooking with all the dead animals that we would be. When I booked the course I wasn't sure how long we

Blog: Midwife Moira's Travel Blog. With Emirates Cabin Crew on the side. - 23 May 2009

It was another early start, but that was not really a problem as we were awake waiting for the ‘wake up call’ having had a real 'wake up call' at Dawn, a Cockrell crowing very loudly! The drive down to the Si Nakharin Dam was very picturesque, going through the Chalom Ratanasin National Park and the Si Nakharin National Park. Both roads were tarred and could be driven by car with no problem.

It was a quick walk from the New Siam Guest House to the river crossing at pier number 11, and a ride on a water taxi over to Bangkok Noi Station, also known as Thonburi Station. We arrived in plenty of time and got our 4 tickets to Kanchanaburi. They cost £2.00 for four.

Blog: Midwife Moira's Travel Blog. With Emirates Cabin Crew on the side. - 20 May 2009

It is very unusual for us to go on organised tours, we normally sort out our own tours using books like the Lonely Planet, Rough Guide ect. We had been very lazy and booked a tour with 'River King' at a desk located in our accommodation, my main motivation for this was that I was assured that the tour included a fantastic lunch, the plan was to drive to Ayuthaya then come back to Bangkok on the river.

Blog: Midwife Moira's Travel Blog. With Emirates Cabin Crew on the side. - 20 May 2009

Because of time differences, We were tired on arriving at the Guest house. Due to the flights arriving so early, we were to early to check in. But we were able to leave our cases at the accommodation. We walked down the road and got breakfast at one of the many restaurants located in the area. Andy, Sarah and I have been to Bangkok before, as a three day stop over on our way to Australia. Rebecca has been a few times with work. So we have visited a few of the main sights. During breakfast I consulted the Lonely Planet and drew up a short list of things we wanted to do.

With Krabi province offering such gorgeous beach destinations, some might not see a reason to venture into Krabi town except in transit to the coast. But there are at least five good reasons to make the trip. 1 Night Market – Top of the list is Krabi’s riverside food market, an area beside the port that [...]

  18. Back in Bangkok

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 8 May 2009

I’m back in Bangkok. I’ve been here two weeks and, despite my desire to be productive, it hasn’t happened. At least, not to the extent in which I wanted it too. I made the mistake of staying right near the world’s best and most popular hang out in Bangkok (at least for my friends)- [...]

  21. Islands of Krabi province – Part 2

Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 14 April 2009

There’s an unofficial hierarchy when it comes to island hopping tours in Krabi. First you do the ‘4 Islands’, followed by the Phi Phi Islands. Then if you still have time, throw in the Hong Islands or ‘5 Islands’ tour. I wonder if there’s a subtext in the tourist information: stay long enough and get [...]

  22. Islands of Krabi province – Part 1

Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 4 April 2009

‘Island hop til you drop.’ Normally a tourism website slogan like this would leave me cold. But in Krabi province, I felt compelled to answer the call. We did three island-hopping tours in the space of a week, visiting around 13 islands. And I’d do it all again tomorrow! First up was the ‘4 Islands Tour’ [...]

  24. Getting Scammed in Thailand

Blog: Two Guys Around The World - 21 March 2009

We hadn't been in Thailand for 10 minutes before we got scammed. We were in the airport and I had just gotten some money out of the ATM. We needed to get to a cheap hotel called "D&D Inn" which was recommended to me by my buddy Ben from Brisbane, Australia.

  25. Bangkok with mother and child

Blog: Oh, the places you'll go! - 24 October 2008

This time last week, I was anxiously watching developments in the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia for the most selfish of reasons: Tash and I were due to fly to Bangkok to meet up with my mum. If hostilities worsened, worst-case scenario, our flight would be cancelled. Or we’d make it to Bangkok and [...]
