  1. What Happened in Mui ne on the Boxing Day Tsunami

Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 26 December 2009

I’m not going to bother to write about how terrible the Tsunami was 5 years ago. There was no devastation in Vietnam, where I of course was at the time, so I’ll let others memorialize the tragedy. It was however, a turning point for Mui Ne, about which many people are unaware. It was the season the Russians came.

Blog: Where is Rob? - 19 December 2009

Well upon arrival in Bangkok for my 4th proper visit (a couple of times where just stop overs) I remembered why Bangkok is currently my favourite city in the world by an absolute mile! The minute I arrived it was chaos, the noise, the smells both good and bad, the traffic, the dirt and the just pure sensory overload that is Bangkok just blew my mind once again and I was so pleased to be back. 5. Friday Flashback – Partying on Koh Phangan

    Blog: GoBackpacking - 18 December 2009

I arrived on Koh Phangan’s infamous full moon party beach a week early to secure a bungalow.  Mission accomplished, however nobody warned me that every night on the beach is party night. And by party night, I mean massive bar sound systems booming psychedelic trance until the sun comes up each morning. My party skills were [...]Buy travel insurance from Worldnomads.com (Lonely Planet's preferred carrier)

Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 12 December 2009

“Police! Help! Police!” As Max screamed into the darkness, someone jumped over the wall of the partially outdoor shower, rustling the thatched roof of the bungalow next door as he fell to the ground. The bare-chested thief bolted around the back of the bungalow and up the dirt footpath, disappearing into the jungle. Lonely Planet had warned us that [...]

  11. Bangkok, Thailand

Blog: Patrick and Katrina do the Globe - 11 December 2009

It was a very long, not very fantastic voyage from Siem Reap to Bangkok. We took a bus to the Cambodian border, waited for a smaller shuttle bus through passport control, and after some more waiting a van picked us up on the Thailand side to deposit us at a nearby roadside restaurant for almost two hours to finally be reshuffled with other travelers into the same vans that then transported us to Bangkok. It was a relief to arrive in town, but the journey was not yet over. We'd made a reservation at the Budget Travel Magazine-recommended JL Bangkok Hotel and finding it was no easy feat.

Klong Plu waterfall on the west coast of Koh Chang is a popular spot to spend a morning or afternoon.  It is signposted from the main road and easily accessible.  From the entrance, where foreign adults pay 200 baht and children 100 baht, it is a 600 metre walk along a shady riverside path to the waterfall which does look pretty spectacular.

  21. Thai Massage: The ultimate luxury or an exercise in torture?

Blog: Passed Ports: images and anecdotes from our travels - 29 November 2009

Thailand is almost synonymous with massage. You can’t go anywhere without seeing those ubiquitous enticing signs: Thai Massage 200bht, or some similar ridiculously low price. Countywide you can score an hour-long massage for about $5-10, depending on where you are (though they can be much more expensive at high-end resorts… and in certain areas – [...]

  22. Why is the bread green?

    Blog: I don't wash my hair - 27 November 2009

As it happened, I ended up in Thailand for Loi Krathong, one of the most important Thai festivals (don't ask me anything about it, all I know is that it's important). It's celebrated in different ways in different cities. In Chiang Mai, hundreds of lanterns are released into the sky, where many catch in branches and set fire to trees, but those that do not look very pretty ascending towards the stars. In Bangkok, small baskets of flowers, candles and incense are lit and set adrift in rivers and lakes.

I remembered that the world is no less my oyster simply because I cannot control its every minute pocket of insanity. (Or in the case of the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, its big, official-looking, concrete, intimidating shithole of insanity where things are run like a choose-your-own-adventure book, only it's not you choosing, of course, it's whatever nut they've hired behind the window.
