Lonely Planet review for Baan Krua
Baan Krua literally means ‘Muslim Family Village’ and is one of Bangkok’s oldest communities. It dates to the turbulent years at the end of the 18th century, when Cham Muslims from Cambodia and Vietnam fought on the side of the new Thai king and were rewarded with this plot of land east of the new capital. The immigrants brought their silk-weaving traditions with them, and the community grew when the residents built Khlong Saen Saeb to better connect them to the Chao Phraya river.

Closed community, be prepared for a few icy stares.

I have been living in Bangkok on and off for many years but only learned about this area today. Though the community has very intriguing history but I didnt see or feel any trace of it today. Regardless, if you want to peel away from the beaten tracks. the area offers another life and side of Bangkok not well known to most. I had a fun two hour walk navigating through an amazing labyrinth of houses, shops and community area. Visiting time is best in late afternoon when the stench from the canal is more bearable.
