Bangkok Sights

  1. Nakhon Kasem

Cooking equipment, spare electronic parts, and other bits you didn't know could be resold are available at this open-air market. During looser times, this was once known as the Thieves Market, selling the fruits of the five-finger discount.

  2. Phahurat

Fabric and gem traders set up shop in this small but bustling Little India, where everything from Bollywood movies to bindis is sold by enthusiastic small-time traders. Behind the more obvious storefronts are winding alleys that criss-cross Khlong Ong Ang, where merchants grab a bite to eat or make travel arrangements for trips home - it's a great area to just wander, stopping for masala tea or lassi as you go.

  3. Talat Noi

This microcosm of soi life is named after a noi (little) market that set up between Soi 22 and Soi 20, off Th Charoen Krung, selling goods from China. Wandering here you'll find streamlike soi turning in on themselves, weaving through people's living rooms, noodle shops and grease-stained machine shops.

  4. Thewet Flower Market

Hardly a practical shopping option, this open-air market, located off Th Samsen, is more for windowless window shopping than actual purchases. You'll discover from the selection that Bangkokians are avid container gardeners and can grow orchids and other exotic plants with minimal care.

  5. Trok Itsaranuphap

Nudge your way deep into one of Chinatown's famous capillaries, where vendors sell dried goods, half-alive filleted fish and vats of unidentifiable pickled things. The soi's poetic finale is lined with stalls selling elaborate funeral offerings and 'passports to heaven' that include paper houses and cars to take loved ones into the next life.
