Lonely Planet review for Jim Thompson’s House

In 1959, 12 years after he discovered the fine silks being woven across the klorng in Baan Krua and single-handedly turned Thai silk into a hugely successful export business, American Jim Thompson bought this piece of land on Khlong Saen Saeb and built himself a house. It wasn’t, however, any old house. Thompson’s love of all things Thai saw him buy six traditional wooden homes and reconstruct them in this jungle-like garden. Some of the homes were brought from the old royal capital of Ayuthaya; others were pulled down and floated across the klorng from Baan Krua –including the first building you enter on the tour. Beware well-dressed touts in soi near the Thompson house who will tell you it is closed and then try to haul you off on a dodgy buying spree.

    lovely products

I use my pink leather pencil case every day and the selection of little silk purses were a great hit as travel gifts. A nice range of luxury items big and small.

    Interesting tour

    diarmuidr recommends this,

We took the tour here - the only way to see the house. Was interesting and fun way to spend a half hour or so. Tour is informative though somewhat "hoky" with lots of scripted humour which was a bit forced. What I loved though was seeing the house and the furnishings and learning more about Thai architecture - in particular I was impressed with how cool the house was with no A/C just using natural ventilation.

Afterwards we had a drink in the bar to sit out a thunderstorm - pleasant place to spend some time looking out onto the very lush gardens.
