Unfortunately it's 'buyers beware' at Siam Emporium
pinktiger does not recommend this,
I followed the recommendations in an edition of the 'Lonely Planet' guidebook to pick two different shirt makers while in Bangkok. One of them was Siam Emporium at Sukhumvit Road.
What I liked at Siam Emporium:
* Very large selection of shirts fabrics (shirts between 30 and 95 US$)
* Shell buttons available, albeit at extra costs
* I will wear the shirts - the final result is well cut and presentable (but don't expect the shirts to be as good as, say, 250$ shirts done at home by an expert tailor)What I didn't like:
* I had to point out that my arms have to be measured separately - arm lengths are not normally identical
* Patterns in the fabric were not perfectly lined up with the shirt's cut, just ok
* It took four visits spread over approx. 10 days to get my shirts (not even suits) completed
* The real issue: sub-standard professionalism (see below)The first shirt Siam Emporium made didn't fit, too tight, which can happen. I asked for correction. On my next visit, all ordered shirts had been completed. To try on, I was handed one of the new shirts (not the corrected one) and informed that all shirts' cuts were now identical so I would not have to try the others. Only upon request was I handed the other shirts - just to find out that I had been lied to and the first shirt still didn't fit (the new ones all did) because it simply did not contain enough fabric in the seams to fit properly without having to use additional cloth! An inch's width missing in the back part alone... and no apology, just statements that they had measured correctly, that I looked good, and so on (no comment that the other shirts fit nicely but were much wider).
Since my hotel was inconveniently located at the other end of town (and I didn't care for more discussions like this one), I offered that we forget the first shirt and I just take the shirts that fit, but the shop refused. They also did not offer to deliver the shirts to my hotel, nor anything else to make things easy for me.
So I had to come in once more, the replacement shirt now fit well. All well? Unfortunately not: I was now asked a "small request" - since they felt the first shirt had been made to "my measurements", I should pay 50% of it.
No way.
I am really not a difficult customer, but shouldn't I be the one offered discounts, apologies or other benefits for my bad experience?I will certainly not go back to Siam Emporium after this experience.
