Lonely Planet review for Cabbages & Condoms

‘Be fed and be sheathed’ is the motto of the restaurant outreach program of the Population & Community Development Association (PDA), a sex education/AIDS prevention organisation. And likewise, for many visitors to Bangkok, this quirky garden restaurant has served as an equally ‘safe’ introduction to Thai food. Thankfully it’s done relatively well. This is a good place to gauge the Thai staples, such as the rich green curry, or the briny pàt pàk bûng fai daang (flash-fried water spinach). Instead of after-meal mints, diners receive packaged condoms, and all proceeds go towards PDA educational programs in Thailand.

    Go anywhere else, not here.

    bob1082 does not recommend this,

It's a sad day for a once proud restaurant. But based on tonight experience I recommend you run, not walk away from this place. The staff took dinner orders sequentially....they took one order, came back several minutes later for others orders. Meals were served sequentially also. They didn't seem to understand the concept of separate check. They never refreshed water glasses nor asked if we wanted drinks after the initial drink order was finished. When we attempted to order dessert we were told the kitchen was closed. When I asked why were weren't informed the kitchen was closing and given an opportunity to order the staff looked me right in the face and lied to me, telling me we were told. We were never asked how our meal was, even given that one of our party ate one bite and left the rest as she didn't care for it. One thing they were able to do correctly and quickly was process the check. I cannot express how disappointed I was in what is now a restaurant which is apparently surviving on its no-longer deserved reputation. With so many new restaurants opening up there are numerous alternatives. Pick one and avoid this disaster.

    Good for: absolutely nothing

Cold Food and just one among many.

    ChristianATW does not recommend this,

When I came the first time to BKK I was drawn by the description of the place in my lonely planet. Sounded good. Not too cheap, nice environment and do something for the public good. Despite the place being pretty (really!) I can't recommend it since my food was cold and the staff was not very attentive.

Now I'm living here and for some all the people that visit me want to go to this place. Why, I ask. Because it was recommended by someone who traveled there. I can assure you, it wasn't me. Seriously..there are so many tasty places in Bangkok, even for people who just start with Thai food.

I wouldn't say its a bad place to go. Just don't expect anything great, apart from an odd name and a condom for desert.

Location is conventient near Asoke BTS.

    Disappointing experience

    lillap does not recommend this,

I was looking forward to trying out the place but the whole experience was a flop. The food (well whatever was served of it) was overcooked. After the starter soups and side dishes i.e rice/noodles came out at the same time my main never turned up leaving the rest of the food to go cold. Didn't get an apology, the non English speaking waitress just laughed and asked an other member of staff to tell me she forgot to order my main dish. He offered to order it but the rest of the meal was cold and my friend's beef dish was burnt to charcoal so we paid and left. Although the restaurant is in a great location and looks nice it's overpriced for Bangkok standards, even for the Sukumvit area. A huge let down.

    Great !!!!!!

    bangkokfrog recommends this,

I thought this place deserves an update from the earlier comments. I first went there 10 years ago (and it was Great !!!!!) and decided to re-visit last night with my family who were visiting BKK even though there were some negative comments here. Still Great !!!!! The service and food were both excellent (for us, although a French guy on another table was complaining loudly... and rudely... about something). I find in Thailand that if you approach everything with a smile and don't get upset if things are not 100% perfect (are they anywhere else in the world???) then you will have a Great !!!!! time.

    Good for: Anyone and everyone!

Not good for: People with an attitude.

    Disappointing decline!

    pontex recommends this,

Over some years, I have eaten at C&C many times, but of late I find a decline in both quality of food and service. For a restaurant that deals with lots of tourists and expats, the waitstaff have limited English. The bar, on my last trip, did not know how to make a gin & tonic, hardly advanced mixology! The atmosphere remains charming, and the choice of AC inside seating and the garden is very nice. But frankly, it is slipping.

    Dining for a cause!

    bangkokgirl recommends this,

Stop feeling guilty and go eat out for a cause! This garden restaurant is one of the prettiest places to dine in Bangkok. At night tiny lights twinkle in the trees, water gurgles from the waterfall and a musician plays, giving it a magical feel. Condom sculptures greet you at the doorway, and with the bill a plate of condoms are placed on the table (be prepared to explain this to the children). The restaurant raises funds and awareness for Thailand’s Population Development Authority and the next to the restaurant is an interesting shop selling many condom related products where you can get more unusual souvenirs from Thailand. The food is reasonably priced and all the Thai favourites are there - mildly spiced. Try the duck red curry! Service is polite and efficient as this is a busy restaurant and reservations are recommended especially for the garden.
If you are only going to eat in one Thai restaurant during your stay in Bangkok this should be the one!

tourist thai with an after dinner condom...very minty!

    njdaniel recommends this,

Cabbages and Condoms has a great philosophy behind the theme. This is a great place for tourist to educate themselves on some of the problems that the Thai people have to overcome. No lecture and a spice of fun.

The resturant is hidden down one of the soi of sukumvit, but not hard to find. Follow the trail of tourists. The atmosphere created by the thai style design of the resturant, the openness and fairy light makes it a good night out.

The waiters are as gorgeous and attentive as everywhere in Thailand. By the way they have heard all the condom jokes so don't embarass yourself by trying.

The food here is very standard Thai that everyone will recognise. It is definately a 1 chiili rating. The rest of bangkok is eating 4 chillis in the same dish. This is great if you love the curries but find yourself hullucinating normally. Try them here. All the flavour and none of the sweats.

Cabbages and Condoms is definately worth the visit for first timer to Bangkok. It's relaxed, fun, safe and where else do you get a condom for the journey home. I guarentee in any group there will be 1 male who states "This is too small. I don't fit asian condoms."

    'Guaranteed not to cause pregnancy'

    thomasmitchell72 recommends this,

This is a brilliantly decorated restaurant featuring condom inspired or condom constructed lighting, posters, paintings and even condom superheroes whilst their food is also 'guaranteed not to cause pregnancy'. All this creates a merry and affable environment which ensures everyone enjoys their visit whilst benefiting a good cause.

The food, while certainly not bad, is not up to the quality of many of the streetsellers littered all over Bangkok and Thailand. When far tastier food can be discovered all over Bangkok at a fraction of the price it makes you question where all the money is going, the answer of course is to charity, so this can be forgiven.

This is a particularly good place to try Thai food if you are not used to spicy food or fear the potential health risks that can come with Bangkok street food.

Cabbages & Condoms - definitely worth a visit

    gambo recommends this,

This is a great place for your first introduction to Thai food.

The setting is beautiful with an outdoor courtyard surrounded by high walls, long hanging vines and thousands of fairy lights. Water coolers spray a mist of water to help diners cool down.

Menu covers a lot of regions of Thailand and food is "farangised" (meaning it is not as spicy as what would be served in a real Thai restaurant).

Definitely worth a look. It is hard to believe this place is only 200 metres off Sukhumvit on Soi 12 because it is rather quiet, peaceful and relaxing.
