  16. Football Golf

At Choeng Mon there's a strange combustion called 'football golf' where you 'putt' your football into a rubbish-bin-sized hole. It's great for the kids and each game (300B) comes with a complimentary soft drink. It's a par 66.

  17. Ban's Diving School

A well-oiled diving machine and relentlessly expanding conglomerate, Ban's certifies more divers per year than any other scuba school in the world and refurbishments in 2009 have given it a five-star feel. Classroom sessions tend to be conducted in large groups, but there's a reasonable amount of individual attention in the water. A breadth of international instructors means that students can learn to dive in their native tongue. The affiliated resort is quite popular with party-seekers.

  21. Rock Climbing

With nearly 500 bolted routes and unparalleled cliff-top vistas, it's no surprise that Railay's dramatic rock faces lay claim to being among the top climbing spots in the world. There are so many climbing options, ranging from beginner routes to challenging advanced climbs, that you could spend months climbing and exploring - and many people do.

The newest buzz is about deep water-soloing where climbers free-climb ledges over deep water - if you fall you will most likely just get wet so even daring beginners can give this a try. Most climbers start off at Muay Thai Wall and One, Two, Three Wall, at the southern end of Hat Rai Leh East, which have at least 40 routes graded…

  22. Diving

Though not home to Thailand's best dive sites, Pattaya's proximity to Bangkok makes it a popular spot to get some underwater action. However overfishing and heavy boat traffic mean the sites closest to Pattaya can be barren with poor visibility. Nearby Ko Larn, Ko Sak and Ko Krok are good for beginners, while accomplished divers may prefer the outer islands of Ko Man Wichai and Ko Rin, which have better visibility and marine life.

In most places expect 3m to 9m of visibility under good conditions, or in more remote sites 5m to 12m. Further southeast, the shipwrecks Petchburi Bremen, off Sattahip and Hardeep, off Samae, have created artificial reefs. The scuttled Thai navy…

    Khlong Prem

While the craze for visiting imprisoned foreigners in Bangkok’s notorious jail Khlong Prem has cooled off, some travellers still make the trek. Visiting details are discussed on several websites, notably www.phaseloop.com/foreignprisoners/prisoners-thailand.html and www.khaosanroad.com. If you want to see a particular prisoner the best approach is to first contact the prisoner’s Bangkok embassy. Consular officials can tell you whether the prisoner, or any other prisoner, wants to be seen; note that they won’t give names or details unless the prisoner has authorised them to do so. If so, they can help out and advise on visiting times, usually a couple of days a week.…

From the pier, hire a motorcycle taxi to take you to the Skills Development Center (one way 10B). You’ll need to speak a little Thai to pull this off (ask for suun pháthánaa sàmàtthàphâap khon taa bàwt, but Pak Kret villagers are pretty easy-going and willing to listen to foreigners massacre their language.
