Lonely Planet review
Mbweni is a quiet, genteel establishment set in lovely, expansive and lushly vegetated gardens about 5km from town, and several kilometres off the airport road. In addition to well-appointed rooms and a relaxing ambience, it has the very good Raintree Restaurant and the new and relaxing Mangrove Bar, overlooking the water and stands of mangroves and ideal for bird-spotting. There’s also a private jetty, from which dhow transfers to and from Stone Town or elsewhere can be arranged. The property was formerly the site of the UMCA mission school for the children of freed slaves.
