  1. My Blue Sweater Moment and Yours

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 25 December 2009

by Jennifer Gong, KF9 Tanzania The Blue Sweater is a book that recounts the experiences of Jacqueline Novogratz, social venturer and founder of the Acumen Fund. The book contains a string of stories, but the most poignant is the tale behind the title of the book. When she was young, her uncle gave her a blue sweater, [...]

  2. Traveling Off the Beaten Path/ Watching my bank account bleed dry

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 18 December 2009

I have to confess that I really haven’t really traveled off the beaten path before I began this yearlong adventure. When I was living in England I was able to travel a bit through Europe, but I never considered those trips the sort that required any real forethought—planning in advance consisted of finding my passport [...]

  3. 9 Weeks Through Africa/ The trip of a lifetime? Hope so.

    Blog: Nilikuta Shani - 15 December 2009

On January 17th, 2010, after spending 3 weeks in Uganda, I get picked up in Nairobi, Kenya, for a 6-week overland trip through Southern Africa—from Kenya, we drive down to Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and finish the journey in Cape Town, South Africa. Epic! I always fancied the idea of traveling extensively through Africa, [...]

  4. I think I might love you

Blog: Where the road goes - 27 November 2009

It was a gentle sort of love affair. Not the wild, passionate, love-at-first-sight sort of thing. More like that feeling that gently creeps up on you when you discover something underneath a friendship, usually far too late to do anything about it. But I digress. These stories have to start at the point where we [...]

  5. Parting Underneath the Flame Trees

Blog: Where the road goes - 26 November 2009

The flame trees outside the Dar es Salaam train station are some of the most beautiful plants i’ve seen in days – more so as their orange flowers lick the deep blue of the sky, cloudless. It’s hardly fitting that here, in this loud and beautiful contrast of colours, our family must come to an [...]

  6. The Local Local Lifestyle

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 14 November 2009

Rebecca Corey, KF9 Tanzania The first time I got shoved out of the way in a mad rush to the dala-dala bus, my friend Victor said to me, “This is the local local lifestyle, pole sana–I’m very sorry.” The next time he said it was when the electricity went out and I was reading in the [...]

Blog: No Hurry Curry - 5 November 2009

10/11/09: Iringa, Tanzania In the middle of the crowded fruit and vegetable market, I felt something bump up against the side of my left leg. Only because I’ve been on high alert in crowded places such as this one did I think anything of it. I quickly glanced down, only to see a hand in my [...]

  9. So Africa Isn’t Perfect After All

Blog: No Hurry Curry - 4 November 2009

10/9/09 – 10/10/09: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Last night will probably go down as one of the worst thus far in Africa. After returning from dinner at 8:30, Zhou and I and most everyone else were ready for an early night to prepare us for a pre-5am wakeup this morning. By 9:00 we were ready for bed. Mistake [...]

Blog: No Hurry Curry - 3 November 2009

10/9/09: Zanzibar, Tanzania I was just getting comfortable on our hour-long bus ride back to Stone Town this morning when all of a sudden we stopped and the driver hopped out to look underneath. The bus was stuck on a small hill, and it looked like several of us fatter riders were going to need to [...]

Zhou’s been granted a few shillings here and there to pick up earrings and a sarong, but I’ve managed to even escape buying a new shirt despite the pleas of Zhou and everyone else on [...]

10/5/09: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Today was our one-month anniversary. 17. Anywhere in Africa

    Blog: Africa Attraction - 29 October 2009

A quick nightcap? Why not? We follow our new friend Mayo through the blackest of nights to the village pub. Needless to say, it’s no Nag’s Head, just a small shack with a small bar and a small television. The all-male clientele aren’t sat at the bar, they’re sat in rows, basking in the luminous bling, bitches and beaches of hip-hop videos. All still, all expressionless. Mayo orders the beer as we take our seats outside the makeshift movie theatre, cloaked in the invisibility of the night, looking on.

This afternoon on our way out of the park, [...]

Blog: Kiva Stories from the Field - 21 October 2009

By Rebecca Corey, KF9 Tanzania After my first day interacting with Kiva borrowers I was exhausted but exhilarated. Outside the Tujijenge branch office in [...]
