Art centre & gift shop, nice selection, reasonable prices

    yseult recommends this,

Nyumba ya Sanaa (Swahili "House of Art") was founded nearly 40 years ago by American nuns http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyumba_ya_Sanaa to support local artists. In 2010, it moved from the location in the city center on Upanga Road next to Royal Palm/Movenpick to Oysterbay on Old Bagamoyo Road about a quarter of a mile east (toward city center) of the US Embassy, on the same side of the road but set back a few hundred yards (opposite Oysterbay Police).
The gallery had a wide selection of local arts and crafts at very reasonable prices (half or less what the big hotel gift shops charge for similar quality merchandise).
In the same facility is the Nyerere Culture House with classes on how to do some of the arts and crafts (e.g., batik).
