Make sure you change enough money before arriving in the region. In Khorog it’s possible to change cash (US dollars) and even get a cash advance off a credit card. In an emergency you might find someone willing to change dollars in Murgab (bring small denominations). Kyrgyz som are accepted between Murgab and the Kyrgyz–Tajik border.
