Not that Nirvana."I was take The Green Bus. So it was written. From Exit 4, Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT. And yet, there I went and Green Bus found I none. Waiting for me in the mountains was respite from all wordly cares, bliss and comfort. Not to mention a 60 metre infinity pool. But how to reach it?

Sara and I have returned from our latest trip:  Tokyo and Taipei.  While I have been to Taipei a few times in the past, this was my first visit to Tokyo.  I must say that I absolutely loved it.  The people were friendly, the city was safe and clean and the food was incredible.  We [...]

  4. Hopes and dreams on parade

Blog: David on Formosa - 18 October 2009

The streets of Taipei came alive this afternoon with the vibrant, noisy and colorful Hope Parade (世界夢想嘉年華). The parade is an annual event organised by the Dream Community (夢想社區) in Xizhi (汐止), Taipei County. The parade began at Freedom Square before a short march through the streets to Ketagalan Boulevard. After arriving on the boulevard in [...]

  5. Taipei Food Tour

    Blog: Ottsworld - 7 October 2009

View my Taipei photography View Taipei snapshots This was my first trip to Taiwan – country number 32. Was I going to see China or was I going to see Hong Kong – I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the tiny island pummeled recently by typhoons. However, I had researched enough to know that at the [...]

  6. Trip to Hualian and Taroko Gorge

Blog: David on Formosa - 14 September 2009

On Saturday morning I met some friends at Taipei Station and boarded the Taroko Express to Hualian. In Hualian we met our driver and headed down the coast. Once beyond the city limits of Hualian the coastline has a lot of open space apart from a few small settlements. We visited this beach had only [...]

  7. Taiwan Roadtrip: Highway 9

    Blog: Travelicious - 7 September 2009

We started out our Taiwan Roadtrip with a traintrip – a morning train from busy Taipei to the south eastern city of Taitung. Here we picked up our rental car, a cute little Nissan March (at home called Micra) and set out for Taitung Hongye Hot Springs, after getting a little bit lost in the beautiful, tall, green mountains we found it; it was closed. We went in anyway to take a look: It turned out half the place was buried in mud! The typhoon that had raged havoc over southern Taiwan just before we arrived had apparently passed by here.

  8. Smangus and the Atayal spirit

Blog: David on Formosa - 21 August 2009

I visited Smangus this week to continue the research for my thesis. There were some significant changes in the village since my visit last year. The major one was the new classroom building near the main entrance to the village. Construction began in July last year and was completed in April. There are currently 12 [...]

  9. Long, hot and Serendipitous Ride

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 15 August 2009

Took a massively long ride with some unexpected happenings today. I'll be leaving Taiwan for a while soon, and I want to get some riding in before I head out. I Left Shijr, where I'm house-sitting, at about eleven and headed along the ugly road to Keelung. Shijr I'm indifferent towards, and Keelung I like. But the road between the two is one of the uglier ones in northern Taiwan. Flat out nothing to write home about for 16 kilometers. Got to Keeling at noon and rode through the Keelung night market, barely recognizing it in the bright daylight.

  10. Morakat slams Taiwan

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 9 August 2009

Just a quick post to let anybody know that most of typhoon Morakat's force was in the southern half of the island. Taipei had wind and rain, and I saw plenty of tree branches down on my various and ill considered rides about the city on Friday and Saturday. The reservoirs up north that had been at near-drought levels just last week are all overflowing, which, in the balance, is a good thing.

  11. Electric Mountain Hot Spring

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 29 July 2009

At Grandma Nitti's in Shida about to enjoy her fine 180 NT breakfast special with a bottomless cup of coffee, sorely needed as I got to sleep around eight AM after a night spent hotspringing and hiking around the back end of Yamingshan with Dave aka HANDSOME DAVE. So this blog is a love shout out, and when I come across something worth shouting LOVE at it'll be indicated with BOLD typeface.Hell, let's make it retroactive!

  15. Hiking and River Tracing in Fushan

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 1 June 2009

Went on an amazing hike Friday with Tammy and Phil,Laurie and Chris. Went up to Fushan, a mountain south of Wulai, which is itself on the northern end of the mountain range that forms the spine of Isle Formosa.  Readers who still somehow have the impression of Taiwan as being a gigantic metroplex / semiconducter factory, something like a cross between Donguan, China and Tokyo's Ginza, will be greatly illuminated by having a gander at Phillip's page of photos from the trip.

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 2 May 2009

Living Taipei was an interesting experience. I had a lot of fun and I think Taipei is a great city, even if I wouldn’t live there again. Some cities you click with, some you don’t. However, Taipei has a lot to do and I would certainly go back to visit. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan. [...]

  21. Taiwanderlust: Alishan Edition

    Blog: 12FOOT3 - 30 April 2009

A few weekends ago, Jeremy and I took our first big overnight trip in Taiwan to Alishan National Scenic Area. Independent travel is not a big thing in Taiwan—probably because there aren’t that many Western travelers here, and Chinese people like the ease of a tour group. So, I was a little intimidated by all [...]

  22. Visiting Taipei 101

    Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 28 April 2009

I’m scared of heights. It’s not so much being high up that scares me, it’s more the fear of falling. Hike with me up a mountain and watch my stay far away from any edge. I once went hiking with a girlfriend and made her get away from the edge because it freaked me out [...]

  23. Taiwanderlust: Cao Ling Historical Trail and Jiaoshi Hot Springs

    Blog: 12FOOT3 - 22 April 2009

Before arriving in Taiwan, I had no idea that the country was full of serious hikers. I guess I thought—like my own family—that the only hobby people from Taiwan really took seriously was eating. But it totally makes sense, this little island is blessed with a rugged coastline and a seriously mountainous interior (with [...]
