  1. Mishaps & Adventure in Taroko Gorge

Blog: To China... and Beyond! - 9 November 2010

Today, I learned an important lesson: When heading out on a 7-hour hike, eat more than 2 slices of toast beforehand. And bring snacks! I spent most of my first week in Taiwan in Taipei, but on Monday morning, my roommate Michael and I hopped on a train to the east coast.

  3. A Little Culture Shock…The Day a Taipei Starbucks Saved my Sanity

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 4 November 2010

Hugging the ice-cold bubble tea to my chest I continued wandering up and down the streets, looking for any sense of normalcy. The bubble tea lady was so smiley and friendly just moments ago…but she didn’t speak a lick of English. And I was confused. Overwhelmed. As I walked among the tall city buildings I passed surprisingly few other people. I kept a clear mental map in my head of where I was in relation to the huge main bus and metro terminal just two blocks to the right and one street ...

  12. All over but the Shouting

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 11 August 2010

Intense exhaustion. Lethargy. A feeling of gratitude, followed by a familiar "what now" sensation. This is what it feels like be done with all guidebook work for the year. Let's recap shall we? In November, I was in Belize, followed by a quick jaunt to California and Colorado, writeup, back to Taiwan, on to Singapore, writeup, back to Taiwan again, long ass research period, more writeup, more research, translation, somewhere in there, a trip to Australia and a visit from the family.

  13. Keelung Night Market

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 25 July 2010

A long day of Awesomeness with Camera yesterday, last leftover of research before finishing loose ends on copy & mapping for Taiwan 8. These shots were taken at the Keelung Night Market, which seems more crowded every time I go there. The one shot of me courtesy of the amazing Tobie Openshaw, who will be providing me with my head-shot for the guide itself.Friends, relatives and loved ones will forgive the radio silence, which may continue until August sixth, my deadline for this project. After that, Malaysia for a magazine article, and then...

I am too relaxed to write a proper blog post, let alone sort through the thousand or so photos I've shot over the last few days. Why? Because my muscles have turned to jelly thanks to the soothing, pummeling hot spring waters at this placeEasily one of the best hot springs I have ever visited, we

  15. A Year in the Isles of Wind

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 8 July 2010

At the insistence of my web Goddess Carrie (she who must be obeyed on all matters inter-web) I'm taking some of my older yet still relevant tales and posting them in serial form over at www.josambro.com. Since I'm back in Penghu, I figured I'd put up a story I did 2 years back for Topics Magazine called "A Year in the Isles of Wind", which is basically me bitching about how living in one of the most beautiful yet tragically wind-beaten spots on the northern hemisphere can make you a bit nutty.

  16. What is Taiwanese culture?

    Blog: PocketCultures - 1 July 2010

It’s hard for me, a Taiwanese, to clearly describe what Taiwanese culture is. We speak Mandarin and have similar traditions to the Chinese, but in other ways we are not akin to China; the majority of our young people are crazy about Japanese and (recently) Korean pop culture; we sometimes refer to all the foreigners as “westerners” or “The Americans” (That really angered my English teacher who was a Canadian!) and we are so friendly to foreigners while we can be secretly biased against different ethnic groups on the island. Sounds ridiculous? I’m serious.

  17. Guandu: Gods in the Hallway

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 1 July 2010

Yesterday was one of those days where I was reminded what I love both about Taipei and my job. After lunch with Dave at one of my favorite vegetarian buffets (Haw Kwang, Shilin station, head west on Zhongzheng road, south side of the street, purple sign) I headed up to Guandu and spent a couple of hours in what is definitely among Taipei's best temples. Here are some photos I came away with.

  18. In the land of the Seediq

Blog: David on Formosa - 21 June 2010

Over the weekend I joined a trip organised by the Research Centre for Austronesian Peoples at Providence University to Ren’ai Township in Nantou County (南投縣仁愛鄉). We visited several villages in the area to learn more about Seediq (賽德克族) culture. The main purpose of the trip was as an orientation for professors from several universities who [...]

  19. Leeloo Battles the Green Demon

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 20 June 2010

Out last night doing bar reviews with my designated drinker, the always charming Vermont-native Leeloo. Found a small slew of new clubs over on the east side and made the last stop of the night the new Velvet Underground club in Ximen, which can be pronounced "Semen" if you enjoy puns of the sixth grade level or are the creators of South Park. The show had just ended, but the owner, Jeff, a very cool dude, wanted to show off his equally cool drink list. One of the drinks was a shotglass of something called "Hell".

  22. Go tell Ma Ying-Jeou

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 9 June 2010

I was rushing down Shipai Road to keep a lunch date with my friend Anna, who was waiting for me in front of the Adventist hospital, at the point in the road where trees on both sides form a canopy & the street name changes to Tienmu East. This is one of my favorite stretches of road in Taipei. To the west, before the name change, the road bursts with life.

  23. Money is Everything you Want

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 6 June 2010

There's this kid who lives in my neighborhood. I call him a kid, but he could be maybe 25. It's hard to tell. Speaks OK English, but seems to repeat a lot of the same ideas in a quick voice that's just a bit too practiced to be considered normal conversation. I think he may be autistic.  The first time I saw him I was walking down my hill."Hello. Are you American? Welcome to Taiwan. Do you teach English?"

  24. Sunday Shopping

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 2 May 2010

Sunday evening, and I am on a train back home wearing the same clothes I was wearing on Saturday afternoon. This is either proof of a weekend well or badly spent, thankfully the former. Bad corespondent your Snarky Tofu has been; indulgence humbly begged. In some future novel will appear a description of the inside of a Taiwanese psych ward; you'll be the first to grok when that bit was researched. But it's OK now, really, and everything is going swimmingly according to plan (though whose plan I'm best advised to avoid contemplating).
