Go tell Ma Ying-Jeou
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 9 June 2010
I was rushing down Shipai Road to keep a lunch date with my friend Anna, who was waiting for me in front of the Adventist hospital, at the point in the road where trees on both sides form a canopy & the street name changes to Tienmu East. This is one of my favorite stretches of road in Taipei. To the west, before the name change, the road bursts with life.

Money is Everything you Want
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 6 June 2010
There's this kid who lives in my neighborhood. I call him a kid, but he could be maybe 25. It's hard to tell. Speaks OK English, but seems to repeat a lot of the same ideas in a quick voice that's just a bit too practiced to be considered normal conversation. I think he may be autistic. The first time I saw him I was walking down my hill."Hello. Are you American? Welcome to Taiwan. Do you teach English?"

Sunday Shopping
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 2 May 2010
Sunday evening, and I am on a train back home wearing the same clothes I was wearing on Saturday afternoon. This is either proof of a weekend well or badly spent, thankfully the former. Bad corespondent your Snarky Tofu has been; indulgence humbly begged. In some future novel will appear a description of the inside of a Taiwanese psych ward; you'll be the first to grok when that bit was researched. But it's OK now, really, and everything is going swimmingly according to plan (though whose plan I'm best advised to avoid contemplating).

The monk wouldn't take cakes
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 4 March 2010
This monk and I had been shadowing each other since Taipei. We took the same bus from the station (a local, apparently; note to self: mention in guide). We stood in line together at the boarding counter. We were both on the one daily flight from Taipei on Jetstar Air, and therefore both going to Singapore. He was in front of me on the immigration line, and behind me going through security. The duty officer went through his bag, but he did not bother with mine. We passed each other on the moving walkway. He was standing still, and I, characteristically, was not.

Taoist Festival in Peitou
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 24 February 2010
Some photos from a Taoist procession that I followed for a while while walking to check out a potential new apartment share in Peitou. The fireworks came later. There are a couple more shots here. Also, there's a short film of the event at www.josambro.com

Hotpot in Taipei, Taiwan
Blog: Dotted Route - 23 February 2010
For those who don't know about hotpot, it goes something like this. It's a communal meal where raw food is presented before you. It can be anything seafood, meat, or produce. The food is usually something that can cook rather fast. You cook in big pot of boiling stock and then take out what you want to eat. Usually there is a sauce to dip you food in.

Freak Out Beast: Punk and Hip Hop in Taipei
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 8 February 2010
Riding through Taipei with old school hardcore blasting in my ears I pull a sudden U-turn to offer alms to a wandering monk and nearly clip a speeding motorcycle. What lesson am I meant to learn from this, I wondered. No. Do not answer that question. It was rhetorical.

Pre-deadline rant
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 5 February 2010
Very, very busy putting together the Belize chapter for Central America on a Shoestring. Listening to Zoogs Rift's version of Macarthur Park, and if you haven't heard it I'd suggest you get it. I have now visited Macarthur Park, and I'd like to say that now the song makes sense to me. Alas, I cannot. Who is this someone who leaves cakes out in the rain? It boggles the mind. But my mind is easily boggled. I need to get some breakfast.

Dear Nice Ladies at the Salon
Blog: No Hurry Curry - 22 December 2009
[Editor's note: This is the second post in our temporary "Two for Tuesdays" campaign to catch our blog up to near real-time.] 12/6/09: Taipei, Taiwan Dear Nice Ladies at the Salon, I’m sorry. I’ve never been to any salon, let alone one in a foreign country. My wife made me come after beating me in poker last night. [...]

Three Meals in Seven Hours is Totally Normal
Blog: No Hurry Curry - 22 December 2009
12/4/09 – 12/6/09: Taipei, Taiwan I guess Tina was worried that we hadn’t been eating well enough so far on our trip, because she and her boyfriend Michael WOULD NOT stop feeding us. Not that I’m complaining about that. On Friday, they took us to La Zhong Jian, an all-you-can-eat hot pot place. Midway through our hour and [...]

Adventures in Taipei, Part 1
Blog: No Hurry Curry - 21 December 2009
12/2/09 – 12/3/09: Taipei, Taiwan You can’t go to Taipei without visiting the tallest building in the world*. To me, Taipei 101 slightly resembles open takeout boxes stacked on top of one another. And they do have a really awesome food court in the basement of Taipei 101. But I’m sure it’s all pure coincidence. We went [...]

Taipei Food Tour
Blog: Ottsworld - 7 October 2009
View my Taipei photography View Taipei snapshots This was my first trip to Taiwan – country number 32. Was I going to see China or was I going to see Hong Kong – I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the tiny island pummeled recently by typhoons. However, I had researched enough to know that at the [...]

Morakat slams Taiwan
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 9 August 2009
Just a quick post to let anybody know that most of typhoon Morakat's force was in the southern half of the island. Taipei had wind and rain, and I saw plenty of tree branches down on my various and ill considered rides about the city on Friday and Saturday. The reservoirs up north that had been at near-drought levels just last week are all overflowing, which, in the balance, is a good thing.

Electric Mountain Hot Spring
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 29 July 2009
At Grandma Nitti's in Shida about to enjoy her fine 180 NT breakfast special with a bottomless cup of coffee, sorely needed as I got to sleep around eight AM after a night spent hotspringing and hiking around the back end of Yamingshan with Dave aka HANDSOME DAVE. So this blog is a love shout out, and when I come across something worth shouting LOVE at it'll be indicated with BOLD typeface.Hell, let's make it retroactive!

Hiking and River Tracing in Fushan
Blog: Snarky Tofu - 1 June 2009
Went on an amazing hike Friday with Tammy and Phil,Laurie and Chris. Went up to Fushan, a mountain south of Wulai, which is itself on the northern end of the mountain range that forms the spine of Isle Formosa. Readers who still somehow have the impression of Taiwan as being a gigantic metroplex / semiconducter factory, something like a cross between Donguan, China and Tokyo's Ginza, will be greatly illuminated by having a gander at Phillip's page of photos from the trip.

The Saturday City: Taipei
Blog: Nomadic Matt's Travel Site - 2 May 2009
Living Taipei was an interesting experience. I had a lot of fun and I think Taipei is a great city, even if I wouldn’t live there again. Some cities you click with, some you don’t. However, Taipei has a lot to do and I would certainly go back to visit. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan. [...]
