  2. Send No Money Now!

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 21 September 2011

I was just reminded that today marks the 12th anniversary of the day Taiwanese refer to simply as "Jiǔ'èryī", or "9/21" - the day a major earthquake hit Taiwan, killing over 2000 people.  I've been so focused on writing about Taiwan for travel (just finished two articles on Taiwan for Lonely Planet / BBC) and focusing on an upcoming interview with NPR (That's National Public Radio for readers outside of the USA...the interview concerns Taiwanese identity on the eve of another anniversary, arguably one whose relevance to Taiwan is, well, less arguable - the 100th anniversary of Su

  6. Six Weeks in Taipei

    Blog: Flying Coach - 13 July 2011

It has been quite some time since we updated our blog with travel notes. Sara and I have spent the last six weeks or so in Taipei, Taiwan where our younger daughter was going to school to learn Chinese. We had lots of local adventures, but also worked on a few projects quite a bit, [...]

  7. Shilin night market, Taipei, Taiwan

Blog: An American in London - 7 December 2010

Night markets are a feature of many Southeast-Asian cities (well, definitely cities with large Chinese populations, anyway), and while I appreciate the beauties of a sunny daytime market in, say, France and Italy, in my opinion, night markets are the best of the market genre. First, they’re practical.  When you’re in a hot, tropic climate, [...]

  8. A Little Food…Tasty Street Eats in Taipei, Taiwan

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 6 December 2010

My 15 hour long layover in Taipei may not have been enough time to settle in and truly explore all that Taipei, Taiwan has to offer but it’s plenty enough time to eat! There were moments where the Asian culture shock was creeping up but the familiar pace of a city extinguished a lot of the potential angst. Instead of focusing on being lost throughout the day I followed my nose along the streets of Taipei, allowing the locals on their lunch breaks to dodge around me as I poked my ...

  9. A Little Tip…A Marathon 15 hr Layover in Taipei

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 3 December 2010

My fifteen hour layover in Taipei, Taiwan was long…fifteen hours in a city is that in-between length of time. Perhaps not long enough to really justify renting a hotel room but an exhausting marathon of site-seeing without a resting spot. And though my Taipei layover was way longer than I would normally choose, I had little choice in the matter so I embraced the craziness of filling that much time without a home-base and explored the city on the three recommendations from my Taiwanese friend Ben (met him in Belize actually!). Three ...

  10. Restaurants and Dining Out in Taipei, Taiwan

Blog: An American in London - 1 December 2010

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to all my American readers!  I trust you all gave thanks, over-ate and over-shopped. It’s been exactly a week since I’ve returned to London after having spent 9 days in Taiwan and 3 days in Hong Kong.  I’m still jetlagged beyond belief, which is yet another annoying sign that I’m getting old. 11. Sushi Revolution!

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 28 November 2010

In Taiwan I ate a lot at a chain sushi place called Sushi Express. Decent Sushi for NT30 a plate - less than a buck US. During the frenzied final write-up weeks for Taiwan 8 I basically took half my meals at the Sushi Express at the bottom of the hill in Beitou where I was living, so if I never eat at one again it'll be too soon. Anyway, during one visit with my family, I got the idea of putting a flip cam into a tea-cup and setting it adrift on the conveyor belt. This is an edit of the film from said momentous occasion.

  12. Din Tai Fung and Kao Chi, xiao long bao in Taipei, Taiwan

Blog: An American in London - 22 November 2010

First, you spot the crowds on the sidewalk.  Then you spot the xiao long bao cartoon character.  This is Din Tai Fung.  Last week, as part of a 9-day trip eating my way through Taiwan, I visited the original Taipei location of what can only be called a xiao long bao empire.  The place is [...]

  13. Faces of Taiwan

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 20 November 2010

Cold Saturday afternoon in Colorado and a call for submissions to a photography competition in Taiwan takes me briefly far away to warmer, wetter climes. Despite the cold and poor choice of seafood I am happy here in my chilly cottage, gas heater at my back only raising temperature incrementally. In a few weeks, off to Olympia, and not long after that, Belize. These are photos taken at different points during my last 3 months in Taiwan, all with the Canon DSLR with various lenses. The submission called for ten, so I culled six of the ones in this slideshow.

  14. Snapshot: Longshan Temple

Blog: To China... and Beyond! - 12 November 2010

Taiwan has turned out to be the perfect destination for someone who is rather “temple-d out,” at least as far as mainland China goes. The architecture and atmosphere of the temples I’ve visited here are completely different from your average Chinese temple.

  15. A Little Culture Shock…The Day a Taipei Starbucks Saved my Sanity

    Blog: A Little Adrift - A RTW Travelogue - 4 November 2010

Hugging the ice-cold bubble tea to my chest I continued wandering up and down the streets, looking for any sense of normalcy. The bubble tea lady was so smiley and friendly just moments ago…but she didn’t speak a lick of English. And I was confused. Overwhelmed. As I walked among the tall city buildings I passed surprisingly few other people. I kept a clear mental map in my head of where I was in relation to the huge main bus and metro terminal just two blocks to the right and one street ...

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 11 August 2010

Intense exhaustion. Lethargy. A feeling of gratitude, followed by a familiar "what now" sensation. This is what it feels like be done with all guidebook work for the year. Let's recap shall we? In November, I was in Belize, followed by a quick jaunt to California and Colorado, writeup, back to Taiwan, on to Singapore, writeup, back to Taiwan again, long ass research period, more writeup, more research, translation, somewhere in there, a trip to Australia and a visit from the family.

  20. Guandu: Gods in the Hallway

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 1 July 2010

Yesterday was one of those days where I was reminded what I love both about Taipei and my job. After lunch with Dave at one of my favorite vegetarian buffets (Haw Kwang, Shilin station, head west on Zhongzheng road, south side of the street, purple sign) I headed up to Guandu and spent a couple of hours in what is definitely among Taipei's best temples. Here are some photos I came away with.

  21. Leeloo Battles the Green Demon

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 20 June 2010

Out last night doing bar reviews with my designated drinker, the always charming Vermont-native Leeloo. Found a small slew of new clubs over on the east side and made the last stop of the night the new Velvet Underground club in Ximen, which can be pronounced "Semen" if you enjoy puns of the sixth grade level or are the creators of South Park. The show had just ended, but the owner, Jeff, a very cool dude, wanted to show off his equally cool drink list. One of the drinks was a shotglass of something called "Hell".

  24. Go tell Ma Ying-Jeou

    Blog: Snarky Tofu - 9 June 2010

I was rushing down Shipai Road to keep a lunch date with my friend Anna, who was waiting for me in front of the Adventist hospital, at the point in the road where trees on both sides form a canopy & the street name changes to Tienmu East. This is one of my favorite stretches of road in Taipei. To the west, before the name change, the road bursts with life.
