The Discovery Centre of Taipei is a good place to get your bearings on the city and its history. You can see maps and models depicting Taipei's evolution from a walled, gated city in 1882 to the bustling metropolis it is today. Discover more about its geography, topography, commerce, famous residents and natural resources. There's a free audio guide in English, and guided tours are available with advance notice.

    what a gem! so much to see here, and it's all free

    This place was amazing - I had to tear myself away from the fascinating displays and the free 360 degree theatre at the top of the building. You could easily spend a whole day here - pick up cheap local eats in the second basement where there is a food market along with a few tables selling jewelry, trinkets and such. check out the displays, which take you through Taiwan's history to the present. But in my opinion the best part was the theatre showing two films about Taiwan. Really well done with gorgeous cinematography that really made use of the 360 degree screen.
