Shilin Night Market
Good for: food, amazing food, mouth watering, mouth watering dirt cheap food, great bargains
Not good for: Paper airplanes, claustrophobes
Lonely Planet review for Shilin Night Market
Considered by many to be the king of Taipei's night markets, the sprawling Shilin Night Market is a nightly carnival of snacking and shopping. Teeming with stalls selling delectable edibles far beyond our ability to describe, the latest in trendy clothing from shoes to hats (and everything in-between), games of skill and chance and much, much more. If you have only one night to spend in Taipei, spend it here.

Overcrowded and overrated.
wix99 does not recommend this,
Taiwan and Taipei have many nightmarkets. Shilin seems to be promoted in all the tourist brochures, but it is not the best. In Taipei I recommend the Raohe Street nightmarket near Songshan Station or head out to the Miaokou nightmarket in Keelung.

This place smells great.

All the native food you could ever want. Exotic things from live snakes to smelly Toufu too. I also enjoyed the Jade market in another part of town. But that's another review. Totally loved Taiwan.

bargains galore. and food so good you have to overeat

Crowds and craziness combine in Shilin. You've got to nab some bargains - you can buy almost anything here. It's disorienting at first, especially with little alleys that shoot off the main market. Many of the stalls sell the same things, so you'll have the feeling of deja vu many times. Make sure you come with an empty stomach - pace yourself as everything is too good not to try. I kept eating long after I was full and never regretted the indulgence for a minute.
