Believe it or not, some good Mexican food was one of the things I most looked forward to when I came to Taipei. Having lived in the Japanese inaka for the past 6 months, I've missed nothing about America more than enchiladas and salsa. Amigo Mexican Food was supposed to be the capstone on a glorious first day of exploration in Taipei.

Alas. Fate can be cruel...

The relief of finding this place was quickly smothered by the horrific realization that Amigo was closed for business. We looked at several nearby entrances - maybe the sign out front was for a restaurant on a different floor. Soon, it became all too clear that the unlit store-front we had double- and triple-checked was indeed what used to be Amigo Mexican Food. Any traces of activity had been removed; tables, coolers or cash registers were nowhere to be found.

Hopefully you read this from the comfort of your home, hostel or hotel, instead of finding out first-hand. There is nothing more crushing than the thwarted pursuit of Mexican food...!
