This aged dame may be a bit frayed around the edges, but she still attracts guests from all points on the map with the cheapest dorm beds in town. On a quiet backstreet, the hostel has a large room for socialising, kitchen facilities, washer/dryer, free ADSL use for laptop users and a rooftop garden. Long-term rates are available, and as the hostel is a nexus of sorts for early-stage Taiwan expats, there's always a buzz about jobs, visas and what-have-you on Taipei life. The website has tips and links to information on Taipei and teaching English.

The Taipei Hostel is conveniently located in downtown Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
It was the first hostel in Taipei and continues to lead in accommodation, service and facilities. The hostel has been proud to host international business men and women, backpackers from the all corners of the world and local residents wanting to mix it with the travellers and have a great time.
For the persons here backpacking around the globe we have a melting pot of cultures, experiences and contacts like no other. Meet real people having real fun and doing real work. This place has it all!
From a rooftop garden for the balmy nights and beers on the balcony and a computer in-house to browse the net and send emails for free, free wi-fi is also available in every room.
Staff at the hostel are very helpful in writing out instructions in Mandarin to help you find your way to your destination, wherever that may be in Taiwan. This sort of help is priceless as I have found out on many occasions.
