Outdoor Public Bath
Next to soaking your feet on the side of the road, Beitou's co-ed outdoor public bath is one of the cheapest options in town. Bathing au naturel is not permitted, so bring a swimsuit or buy one there. This public hot spring boasts a number of pools ranging in temperature from comfortably warm to damn near scalding. There's also a frigid pool off to the side for those who enjoy a good constitutional jolt. The springs can get crowded, especially after work on chilly days, or on the weekends. If you want to have a bit more space, go during the day on a weekday, but even this is no guarantee.
An older gentleman is employed by the baths as some sort of 'hot-spring cop' – in…

Lengshuikeng
The public bath on the park's eastern side has separate men's and women's indoor baths, although free admission means there can be long queues to enter. Its name means 'cold water valley', and compared with other local hot springs it's chilly, at 40°C. High iron content makes its waters reddish brown. Technically, Lengshuikeng is open to 5pm, but it's often open later, so phone ahead if you're considering an after-hours visit. The pools are closed for up to an hour at various times during the day for cleaning.

Formosa Fun Coast
In the shadow of Bali's Kuanyin Mountain sits this ancient park replete with cultural treasures dating back to the Ming…oh, who are we kidding? It's a water park, filled with rides, wave pools, and slides so hellishly steep that when you stand on the platform looking out over at Kuanyin Mountain in the distance (we didn't make that part up) you may say a short prayer to the goddess herself before throwing yourself over to gravity's tender mercies. Culturally significant? Not really. Hell of a lot of fun? Hell yes! Try to plan your trip on a weekday for maximum ride/minimum queue time.

Calla Young Garden Resort
This new hot-spring resort is tops in every way, from the outdoor co-ed pools offering varying temperatures for soaking (with amazing views of Yangmingshan to the south and Jinshan and the Taiwan Strait to the north), to the semi-enclosed sex-separated multi-temperature pools. All this makes Calla especially worth the trip, but what puts the resort over the top is its restaurant, with an excellent chef who excels at creating Japanese/Chinese/Western fusion dishes that may well be one of the culinary highlights of your Taiwan experience. Though you can come here just for a soak (or spend the night for that matter; check the website for Calla's various package deals), the…
