Purple Butterfly Valley
Lonely Planet review for Purple Butterfly Valley
The valley is not one geographical location, but a number of sites around the recreation area. Some will be signed as you drive along the main road, but enquire at the visitor information centre for good locations.
The best time to watch the butterflies is between 9am and 11am, when the sun first comes over the mountains and rouses the insects from sleep. On cooler or rainy days the butterflies remain motionless, hanging from the trees like garlands (though it's not easy to spot them). It's possible to arrange a tour with De En Gorge Guesthouse.
