Things to do in Hiva Oa

  1. Espace Culturel Paul Gauguin

For Gauguin fans, a visit to the refurbished Espace Culturel Paul Gauguin is a must. Don’t get too excited, though; you won’t find any originals, just digital copies of his work. The detailed signs in English are very informative. Once you’ve done a full round of the paintings, timeline and literature, head outside and have a look at the Maison du Jouir (House of Pleasure), a replica of Gauguin’s own house.

  2. Jean & Nadine Oberlin

If you’re looking for souvenirs, it’s not a bad idea to stop at Jean & Nadine Oberlin, a couple from Alsace who fell in love with Hanaiapa long ago. They make lovely tapa (with a contemporary twist) as well as engraved calabashes. Their house (and workshop) is right at the entrance of the village, about 200m from the turn-off to the petroglyphs here (look for the ‘Artisanat’ sign).

  3. Snack Kaupe – Chez Kahu

Blink and you’ll miss this discreet venture conveniently positioned across from Espace Culturel Paul Gauguin (no sign). No culinary extravaganza here, just a few classics faultlessly prepared (grilled sirloin, grilled fish, shrimps with tomato sauce). Kahu himself is something of a star in the Marquesas – he’s one of the best Haka Manu (Bird’s Dance) dancers.

  4. Centre Jacques Brel

Housed in a big aircraft hangar, behind the Espace Culturel Paul Gauguin, is Centre Jacques Brel. In the centre is Brel’s plane, Jojo; posters tracing the musician’s life adorn the walls and his music plays dreamily over the sound system.

  5. Hoa Nui

Hidden amid a jungle-like foliage, this modest eatery specialises in Marquesan cuisine (think pork, fish, seafood or goat), though the desserts are disappointing. Chinese specialities are sometimes offered too, but are much more ordinary.

  6. Snack Make Make

You wouldn’t guess it from the unprepossessing surrounds, but this place boasts an eclectic menu, from Chinese specialities and fish dishes to goat and mussels. Gourmet it’s not; tasty and inexpensive it is.
