Popular with locals and tourists alike, this casual café in the lovely courtyard of a splendid old Damascene house serves up Syrian standards like mezze and kebabs, alongside international dishes such as 'beef stricanof'. Locals mainly come for the sheesha and coffee, but the fresh juices are delicious.

Situated in the Islamic quarter of the Old City, Beit Jabri is one (of three) of my favourite restaurants in the area. Food: Personally, I think the food in Al Khawali and Leila's is better than Beit Jabri, but I do come here especially for the chicken shawarma (I think this is only on offer for dinner). Prices are very cheap; I ate with my brother here for only £5 (UK £). They offer the usual Syrian Mezze + dishes, as well as Western alternatives. Additionally, the spelling mistakes on the menu will leave you in stitches! In my experience, the local Syrians usually come to Beit Jabri for coffee and a smoke. In terms of drinks; I don't drink alcohol, so I am unable to offer any advice on this, however, the lemon/mint drink is very popular. Fresh juices and soft drinks are also available. Service: Annoyingly slow, usually due to the fact that it gets really busy and the waiters can't keep up. If you don't get your menus upon arrival, you may have to nag the waiters to bring you some. They usually also provide you with a box of tissues, complimentary khobz (or bread) and water as well. Atmosphere & Setting: This is my all-time favourite restaurant in the Old City for atmosphere. Set in a courtyard of a gorgeous old Damascene house with many layers to oggle at, and a fountain in the middle of the space. An internet cafe and art gallery have also been incorporated. Live music is offered from time to time - a singer and/or a violinist - but I am unsure of whether this is a set or spontaneous feature. Beit Jabri has great ambience, and a light, airy feel. It is a popular place, so booking is recommended (though, I've never really booked and have always managed to find a table). Every time I visit, I feed off the buzz and the energy that throbs from the walls. Overall: A thrilling experience and a great vibe accompanied by cheap and affordable Syrian food.
