Sadly, I lost contact with a couple of Syrian friends in 2011 (I remain hopeful they are safe or got out) but I was able to keep in contact regularly, by sms or phone, with a friend in Latakia. Now I can't! Does anyone know what the current situation regarding telecommunications is? I'm in Australia.
Has anyone made this trip recently?
I'm coming to Lebanon soon and am interested in hopping over to Damascus and spending a night there before going back.
I'm looking for strictly first hand or verified second hand information about the possibility of getting a Syrian visa in Beirut or about showing up at the border and being let through, as a south European national, and also about the treatment a European traveling this route would get from Syrian authorities on checkpoints (it would sucK to…

Not cheap but obviously you don't want to skimp on these kind of things. Went to Qamishli, Amuda, Kobani, Tishrin, Hastakah, and Al Shaddadi.
A really interesting place, seeing the Kurdish people asserting their independence, the destruction and havoc from ISIS, and the complex Syrian and international factions all at play. Looking…
