Lonely Planet review for Hiltl

Hiltl has been a fixture of the Zürich health-nut scene since the turn of the century. It endured some lean times as it tried to establish itself in a hostile, meat-munching culture, but these days its combination of stylish vegetarian dishes and warm, family-run ambience pull in the crowds.

    Great place and excellent food

    rss99 recommends this,

Hiltl can be busy - you might have to leave your cell phone number and have them call you when a table opens up. But it is a big restaurant, on multiple levels, with a funky decor. A-la-carte and buffet available. The food is really excellent.

    Three lonely buffalo? What? What?

    mackemtraveller recommends this,

I'm sure even the French Resistance would have been proud of the code. 'Three lonely buffalo for table twenty.' I have no idea why I and my two female friends were accorded lonely buffalo status, but we were glad to get a table at all in the packed and popular Hiltl.

The interior is quite elegant, especially the snug corner we were placed in. Despite the heaving crowd of eaters, the service was fast and efficient, and the staff friendly (something one seems able to repeat about all service in Switzerland). The food is excellent and as healthy as a vegetarian yoga teacher on detox. It's all hearty fare with plenty of pulses, salads and grains on offer. Special praise must be reserved for the Indian dishes; Hiltl is perhaps the only restaurant I've ever been to outside of India whose food has that authentic Indian taste I had thought one only found within India. The curries are phenomenally good and I highly recommend the sweet lassi.

This is a brilliant restaurant, the only drawback being table availability due to its immense popularity. Still, one can stuff one's guts here, guiltless in the knowledge that all that healthy nosh is doing you good. I and the other two buffalo heartily recommend it.
