Lonely Planet review

In the 1930s, '40s and '50s theatrical stars performing at the neighbouring Theater am Central (today the Arthouse Alba cinema) stayed at this small urban hotel. Today, its vintage theatrical spirit is rekindled in a modern minimalist interior created by innovative Zürich architect Pia Schmid.

The addition of an edgy glass atrium casts a bright light on the breakfast room. But it is the collection of contemporary art created from 180-odd stage photos uncovered during renovation works that is the pièce de resistance. A trio of the black and white images hang in each room, enlarged, framed in boldly coloured Perspex and re-arranged by cutting-edge video artist Ruth Baetig into 13 plays. So thespian guests, take your pick: rooms 201, 301 and 401 tell the tale of Monsieur Lamberthier; My Niece Susanne is the focus of rooms 108, 208, 308 and 408; those ending with the number 10 show scenes from Noël Coward's Private Lives; while the number 12s portray the strain of saving a 20-year-old marriage. Those who haven't borrowed an audio-book from reception can make the synopsis of the plays - look for the red book - bedtime reading instead.
